Destroying projectiles out of screen?

I suddenly had this thought that spawned projectiles that aren't set to be destroyed on collision, would be "travelling on" and on, existing while the level is played, eating up processing power each and every one.
Is this correct please? Should I get the projectiles missed destroyed at some point? I'm guessing now that this is an obvious question, but thought I ought to check. Or maybe at a certain point they are automatically destroyed (I doubt that though).
Edit: just checked, I've got the missiles fading after half a second and then destroyed anyway. I must use GS in a half-daze sometimes.
But out of curiosity sake, would still like to know the answer to the question above; cheers!
