Publishing Companies

Hey everyone,

Just wondering if anyone here ever had success with publishing your games through a company such as Ketchapp or Noodlecake?

Do you think it matters to them what game engine you used? (GameSalad, Corona, Cocos2dx, GameMaker, etc.)

Just wondering if anyone here ever had success with publishing your games through a company such as Ketchapp or Noodlecake?

I cant tell you that. But what I can tell you is that one publisher contacted me some time ago about a project I never finnished. Anyway, this publisher would have taken 30% of the income, after Apples cut and after whatever other taxes. But, according to the guy I had contact with, they would take care of advertising the game and they had some neat contacts.

So basically, check out how much their cut is. Do you believe in your game? If yes, can you advertise on your own? If not, then check out what it would mean signing a contract with a publisher. Think it really through!

Do you think it matters to them what game engine you used? (GameSalad, Corona, Cocos2dx, GameMaker, etc.)

For this publisher, the engine used for development did not matter.

Lastly, I asked pretty much the same question (except for the part about success) when this publisher contacted me. Here´s the thread. Check it out and you might get a couple of answers:

Hope this helps. Take care, and good luck!

Unfortunately dealing with any publishing company that is actually worth something means being able to integrate 3rd party sdk, something that Gamesalad does not support.

We made a game called Tumble Jumble for iOS @ PC Retail via several publishers for different countries and i would say the iOS publisher was the worse experience we've had (we used Chillingo).

Tumble Jumble went into walmart in the US as a physical copy on PC but it took me 4 years to get any money from the publisher.

My advise steer clear of publishers although I'm sure theres some good ones most are out for themselves.

@Lovejoy is correct as many will want you to incorporate code you simply can't do with GameSalad like Chillingo's Crystal for e.g.

    Thanks for the answers.

Why would they ask me to integrate a 3d sdk if I only want to be working with publishers who publish simple 2d games.

Lovejoy is right. But its true, of course, it depends on the publisher!

I see a lot of you are saying to steer clear of publishers. But, with the market being so crowded how are you supposed to get any visibility? I don't have a huge budget for marketing. Just creating games is already a big investment for an indie.

Well, maybe not exactly steer clear of them, but rather being very careful! Cuz they know the market is so crowded that many indies will come to them to get visibility, so the chances are unfortunately high that they make unfair deals. So we are just saying that you should be very careful!

Good luck and hopefully you'll find some honest publisher!

    Cheers!

Some publishers have been accused of looking at submitted apps rejecting them and then just copy and submit your app. Google it!! Not sure of what is true though.

@gattoman I've heard this too. Unfortunately it is true as there is nothing stopping them from doing so. If you submit your app to a publisher and they think it's a great idea and say its a relatively simple game to make. They can easily have professional game designers recreate the game, and just re skin it, and the game is owned by them, which they don't have to pay royalties to the owner. It would be extremely hard to prove they took your game idea and you would be robbed. I'm not saying all publishers are bad, but definitely make sure they are a reputable company and read ALL their terms and conditions. If your not good at it, hire a cheap lawyer to explain it to you, because you can lose a lot of money from sneaky businesses that know how to cheat innocent game designers looking to make a buck.
