Advice needed on camera controls

Hi all
I hope someone can share some advice with me regarding camera controls.
I've made a platformer style game where the camera is controlled by the movement of the main character.
However i am finding that this is causing a lot of leap of faith moments which i want to minimise.
Does anyone have any guidance on how to set the camera to move based on the user touching the screen, then return to the actor when he starts moving.
I've experimented a little with the camera origin snapping to the mouse position but the experience so far has been poor

You might be better to have an offset to allow more of the scene to be visible.
This will show you how and can be edited for left movement also.
