Macintosh, especially if you are planning on developing with Gamesalad.
I admit to being a Mac lover, but the reasons I'd say to stick with a Mac with Gamesalad are that if you are publishing iOS games or Mac games they MUST be published through a Mac computer (Apples Rule) and Gamesalad has always been more up-to-date for the Macintosh than for Windows.

I´m with jamie_c on this one. Definitely a Mac. Even if it´s an older model.

I personally would not buy second hand anything, but id still go with the mac instead of pc if working with Gamesalad. If money is an issue, look at the new mac mini's. Quite affordable and powerful.

I think a used laptop is fine as long as you purchase it from a vendor and they provide a decent warranty (e.g. one year). I wouldn't buy a used laptop from a private seller unless you really know your way around computers. It's easy to make a laptop look good by cleaning it, adding a little memory, etc., but you won't know how well it functions until you've had it for a few weeks/months.

Mac for game making. PC for playing them !

The decision is a simple one:
If you answer yes to 1, build a PC. If you answer no to 1 but yes to either 2 or 3, buy a Mac. Basically 1 is the only reason to buy a PC in my opinion.

I wouldn't trust a used laptop...... I would get a new mac if you can afford it.
found a place that sells refurbishments with 12 months warrenty
mac, new or used, just not a used one that has had expanded memory & whatnot

If it was me Jim I'd go for Mac.
I don't own one but I do know that the advantages for GS at the moment are far more than PC.
My current setup!
I bought a secondhand macbook, that's about 8 years old now, and it's still running fine. Well, good enough, that I can use it without too much hassle.
Thanks for this, it's helped me make my mind up, I'm not a gamer I'm a designer... Soo
@JimmyMesser Mac all the way! I recommend to buy the early/late 2011 model or 2012. There's a huge performance change compared to the older models since it comes with an i5 or i7. you can probably get them for around $500.
You can double-boot to Windows on a Mac, if absolutely necessary.
It wasn't really about windows. I'm not massively bothered with having a duel boot it was more about budget within a decent time frame. I think I have found what I need just need to make the rest of the money I need.
