Should I Create Another Company Name For Doing Business Apps?

Hey GS,

  I am stuck in a pickle and want to get others opinions. My current company name is Killer Penguin Studios. I am now getting into developing business apps for companies such as Dealer Ships, Hair Salons, Restaurants, Gyms, Spas, etc. I am debating if I should keep Killer Penguin Studios for game development and create another name for doing business apps. What do you guys think and if you guys have ideas for names, feel free to post them!

    After this I need to figure out a website remake but that's a whole other story and pickle! LOL Thanks in advance for your input and thoughts!

    I think it makes sense to have a more professional name for business clients that aren't going to necessarily recognize that "Killer Penguin Studios" fits right into the slew of clever/bizarre/funny/creative app development company names.

    I think you should keep "Killer Penguin Studios" for games and use a professional company name for your business clients. I agree with @tatiang ... If you need help with your website down the track let me know ... I'd be happy to help you ... :wink:

    I am going to say have a new professional name for business apps like @neoman @tatiang said. You have helped me a lot @KillerPenguinStudios so I also would love to help out with a website. (:

    Go with killer penguins, screw those stuffed suits.
    Just kidding, definitely go with a professional business name.

    @KillerPenguinStudios I ran into a similar issue and I decided to have a completely separate company for the business apps.

    I'm a man of many hats - I'm a hypnotist, an author with 2 published works, an instructor at two colleges, a web designer, a magician and mentalist, an internet marketer and I also develop mobile apps and do web programming (mostly .NET).

    Most people can't wrap their minds around that because they pigeon-hole us as part of the "first impression"... he is an electrician, she is a teacher, etc.

    It's the same way in business. Only more so. If they want a business app, they're going to go to someone who specializes in business apps. If they want a game, they'll go with someone who specializes in games.

    So, the end result of my long winded explanation is... create a separate company or company name to do business as... "Innovative Mobile Developers" or something that sounds very professional. You'll be taken much more seriously than Killer Penguin Studios... sadly.

    Keep the Killer for fun, but the penguin has to wear a stuffy suit when biz is on deck.

    Yup,

    You'll want a name that your clients won't feel uncomfortable saying.

    Thanks a bunch @neoman and @BIG_THINKIN_APPS! Means a lot guys!

    My biggest pickle I am facing with my website is my current website is more of a portfolio site with everything I do and all my work such as mobile games, websites, graphic design, and now business apps. Wondering if I should just make 2 separate web sites, one for mobile games and another for the business apps and just have those 2 or have the 2 separate sites and a main page that is 1 page the shows first and you are given the option to choose if you want mobile games or business apps and websites then which ever you choose goes to that site. Or if I should just do something different. Would like to get your guys thoughts and opinions on that and hopefully that makes sense how I am stuck.

    If you want to get an idea of how my site is now, feel free to check it out.

    Thank you @ookami007,

    I am exactly in the same boat. I am a man of many talents and can succeed in all of them but people just can't wrap their heads around it. They look at you like you have 3 heads. If you have a website up, I am curious how you did your website and went about it. If you read my above comment (2nd comment above this one) you will see the issue I am having.

    Thank you again!

    I know @RP, thank you! Just really trying to get all this stuff together and doing well! Just got my new business cards in with the new logo for Killer Penguin Studios. Got 1,000 of them but guess I will be ordering another 1,000 when I get the new name figured out and get a logo for that.

    Dang it, totally forgot I will need another logo now for the new name, lol

    Yes, definitely go with something more professional for business like "Psychotic Killer Penguin Studios" with the slogan "You only need to trust us once"

  • ookami007ookami007 Member Posts: 581

    @KillerPenguinStudios - I created multiple websites. I have domains for my books, I have domains for my games business, I have domains for my teaching, I have domains for my hypnosis, etc.

    While there is some cross-over (I teach web design and hypnosis and soon game design with GameSalad), most are completely separate.

    The REALLY hard part is social media... trying to keep my personal life away from my performing life, away from my teaching life, etc.

    Profitable Penguin Studios ought to do it. >:)

    Seriously, if you're going to do it and incorporate, it'll cost some bucks. If going the DBA route (doing business as), it'll cost less, but there are other legal considerations.

    If you can swing it (and be successful), incorporate to protect your personal interests. Possibly an S-Corporation or LLC? Get some lawyer friend to explain it to you.

    @tatiang, @neoman, @BIG_THINKIN_APPS, @superbullet, @ookami007, @RP and anyone else. I was thinking of maybe keeping the Penguin brand and change the character logo to him wearing a tux or something and doing a name such as Penguin Marketing, Penguin Marketing Solutions, Mobile Penguin Apps, or KP Marketing, or something along those lines;

    Or should I move away from the Penguin brand and come up with something new and different. Thank you in advance guys! This is such a difficult decision and so complicated. LOL

    @KillerPenguinStudios

    I would have 2 total separate websites. I have a website for each thing that I do even if it is semi related. www.connersprojects.com

    @KillerPenguinStudios - I like KPS Mobile Development. No one has to know what the KPS stands for. :-)

    I'd stay away from a cartoonish logo. Something stylized that doesn't look like it belongs on the box of Nintendo game would be good.

    Trust me, I've been working in IT for 25+ years, I can't tell you how many times a manager or director has written off a company just because they sounded amateurish.

    But that's corporate America, if you're going for small business, you might be ok with a cutsie logo.

    @KillerPenguinStudios I agree with the guys above: separate business name, separate website, and separate domain name. People really hang onto that first impression. I don't feel that the word "Penguin" relates to a B2B app studio. What about "App4U.biz", if it's not already taken?

    @KillerPenguinStudios

    Great minds think alike! I actually just made another company under a more professional business name. I have a few apps and clients already. Although I like "Rabid Parrot" because of its meaning to me the name doesn't really fit a business style name. So I decided to keep Rabid Parrot my business for games and my other company for just business. It works perfectly.

    I think it should be something like this...example using my last name

    "Ballew Ventures LLC"

    @KillerPenguinStudios

    I'd suggest making the business name KPS (plus whatever domain extension is available for KPS).

    For example (these are apparently available):

    kps.mobi
    kps.guru
    kps.rocks
    kps.today
    kps.solutions

    etc.

    I personally like "KPS Solutions"

    That they do @RabidParrot, that they do! Thank you for your input! Helps out!

    @ookami007, @Thunder_Child, @PhilipCC, & @Summation, thank you all and everyone else for your input! Greatly Appreciate It! I too like KPS Solutions but think I'm gonna steer away from the penguin brand for this. I think the name I came up with is going to be "On Point Business Solutions". I am gonna go with business solutions in the name rather than mobile solutions because I don't want to put myself in a corner where I am stuck just doing mobile stuff. I want to do websites as well, so by not using "mobile" in the name, this will allow me to not be stuck.

    Again, thank you everyone for your thoughts and input!

    A bit late but I too think killer isn't really doing it for a business name. Maybe change it a bit.
    Frozen Penguin Studio perhaps. ;)

    I would advise against having "Business" in front of "Solutions" because then your initials become "...BS" and that will stick in people's minds, if not in their subconscious.
