App pricing? $0.99 or $1.99?

aalzankiaalzanki Member Posts: 283
I'm pricing Doodle Destroy 2 at $1.99, while my other game Doodle Destroy FREE is free. Some people are writing reviews on Doodle Destroy FREE complaining that $1.99 is too much.

Do I change the price to $0.99 ?

I would say yes. You will be likely to receive more sales.

I'd personally send all the complainants an email stating that their cheapness is what's wrong with the world, and that I was going to find where they live, come over and eat their cat.... alive.

Well done! What's the game? I'm thinking I might go for $1.99 now too if it doesn't affect sales that much... I'd be happy with 224x70c!!!!

WHoa, I worked that out on the 99c option. lol. YOU'RE RICH!!!

Just thinking about it. I buy a few apps. I'll even spend $15 on good games. I've been playing them for alost thirty years and even spent $250 (NZD) on brand new copies of Virtua Racing and Super Street Fighter II for Mega Drive.

I'm going to try $1.99 for my game.

At the end of the day, yes... there are people who will only spend 99c but I'm guessing that they are far outweighed by the people who are willing to spend "just a buck more". It is, after all, still only 2 bucks!

    A worthy test!!!

I think the pricing game is just a guessing game, I'm not sure how anyone could ever find fair statistics.

I myself think the $.99 is probably a better way to go, just because if you look at the top selling games, Angry Birds, Doodle Jump etc. they are always $.99. The biggest market in games is still the younger folks who like to have a wide variety of games in their device, so even though it's just a buck or two, most tend to be a little cautious with where they spend.

I don't personally buy many games, but when I am tempted, I don't think I've ever bought a game app that was over $.99.

But seriously, yes, there is a LOT of CRAP on the iPhone but there are also games that are equally as impressive as some of the top PSP games. My cousin was most depressed after buying 300(great movie btw) for the PSP, only to see me playing Hero of Sparta on iPod Touch - a FAR superior game.

I agree that pricing is a guessing game, and arguments can be made for both sides.

For 99 cents, you're going to get more people purchasing the game on a whim because it's cheaper.

When you raise the price of your game to 1.99, you are also raising the perceived value of the game. I suspect that you are going to get more of an audience who looks through the app store a bit more carefully for quality games. I (personally - I know not everyone is like me) have no problem spending 5, 6 dollars for an iPhone game if I'm pretty sure it's going to be amazing. Compared to every other gaming system that is still a ridiculously cheap number.

So long story short, I don't have an answer to this :) I priced my app at 1.99 because I felt that it was worth more than 99 cents.

Is it selling well at 1.99? I'm thinking along the same lines... Max Vector is not a flashlight or fart app. A hell of a lot of effort went into it (and I have royalties to pay - lol).

On a side note... a friend of mine just released a 99c app to cash in on a popular "fad". I didn't say anything but I was appalled at the lack of effort that went into it and thought "yup... this sure is a 99c app". Seriously, I deleted it straight away... thing is, it'll probably make him rich!
