Help Volty

"Growing up during the 8- and 16-bit era, making our own real game was always a dream.

Rand Daling lay in bed for days, in the VA Medical Center in San Diego. Mr. Daling, a disabled veteran, was bound to his hospital bed for an unforeseeable time, away from his wife and two kids. Somehow, he came across our game Help Volty, while browsing on his iPad, and decided to install it. He contacted us for the fist time asking for some hints to solve the third puzzle. During the following weeks, we had some wonderful conversations, and Mr. Daling told us many times how much he loved the little fantasy world of Help Volty. After a while, it was not uncommon for him to have his bed surrounded by nurses, all watching over his shoulder, actively suggesting things he should try to solve the puzzles.

During these playing sessions, Help Volty gave him some brief moments of joy, even though at some times he admitted his condition hindered the dexterity needed for some parts. While developing the game, we had a small batch of real life Volty coins made, that we planned to give away to special fans. Obviously, Mr. Daling was on that list. We asked for the hospital’s address and his room number, but, curiously, he gave us his home address instead.

After quite a while we got a message from a very happy Mr. Daling, who apparently was discharged from the hospital and at home, where his wife had put the Volty coin on their mantelpiece waiting for him to come home. As a way of thanking us, he gave Help Volty the warmest and most wonderful review. Overwhelmed by the way our little game had touched someone thousands of miles away, we are strengthened in our belief that Volty, the small unlikely hero, has the potential to make a positive impact on many many more people.

We think the charm of Help Volty is obvious to a substantial audience, who appreciates the dark quirkiness and mix of action and puzzles. The people who discover Help Volty, from four-year-olds to retirees are all extremely positive, but they are hard to reach in the current app-ecosphere."
