Recording Tips.

As of today. What is the latest and greatest way to record gameplay video of your app or WIP?

What are the top 3 best methods.
How do you do it?

p.s. Prefer not to have to jailbreak a device to do it.

I used to use this to grab video right from the creator, but they came out with a way to record right from any lighting cable attached device:

I used it twice today to pull video from an iPhone and iPad, quality was great, easy to use, and even has some basic editing built in.

With a Mac you can easily record your screen with QuickTime player. Open QuickTime, go to file -> new screen recording.

I´m not sure, but i think you can also record your iPad with QuickTime.

yes, you can use quicktime to record directly from any lighting cable attached device, i think it requires iOS8+, Yosemite and Xcode6

I use reflectorapp - and I know @The_Gamesalad_Guru does as well. Great app and records very smoothly.

I used QuickTime. But the recordings either records it choppy. Or recording it causes gs player to become choppy. Is there a video on how to record via device and lighting cable?

From my own testing . . . (all recorded from an iPad3) quality in order of Mbps

    1) New Atomos Ninja Star - Max 220 Mbps to Apple ProRes 10bit 4:2:2

    2) Elgato HD60 - Max 44 Mbps to 8 bit H.264.

    3) Elgato HD - Max 30 Mbps to 8 bit H.264.*

    4) Reflector 2 - around 16 Mbps to 8 bit H.264.

    5) Quicktime / various screen capture software - around 10 Mbps.

*With N°3 Elgato HD I only managed to capture 30fps, with all the other I could capture 60fps, the Elgato HD is advertised as being capable of capturing 60fps, but try as I may I wasn't able to, even with a lot of updating capture software and playing around with settings.

@Socks Do you think I could record from a Roxio Game Capture HD?

I use 2 methods...both use the QuickTime recorder...for use with Macs of course.

    1. Do a screen recording and crop to size of scene in the previewer...only audio method is to record via internal microphone...

    2. If you have at least an iPhone 5S you can use QuickTime to do a "movie recording" and record both video and audio directly from your device...this is my favorite method unless I want to provide narration.

If using a PC I found no better screen recorder than Fraps 3.0. Best ever for me for PC

'From' ? Do you mean through ? I don't know what you are trying to do, I don't know what is on either end of the process (Kindle, iPhone4S, iMac, HHD recorder, iPad mini, PC, 2007 MacBookPro), so I can't really comment ! :o

Thanks for all the ideas. So far I'm enjoying the QT with morning cord method.

Ah! The old 'morning cord method'

The difference in quality between a straight QT screen-capture and one of the higher quality options is quite pronounced - if you are planning at some stage to use the capture to create a preview video for the App Store it's worth bearing in mind that screen-capture footage will need to be edited and recompressed (on rendering) so you can upload to the App Store, and the App Store will recompress your video again - so you really want to start out with as best quality as you can . . . . with some projects (more graphic / minimilist design) this will be less of an issue, but with fast moving games with a lot of on screen action this becomes a real issue.

OSX - If you want to record the audio of your project at the same time as your video, then download 'SoundFlower' (free), once installed select SoundFlower (2ch) as the output source in System Preferences > Sound, then back in QT when you select New Screen Recording click on the little white drop down arrow on the right of the Screen Recording panel and select SoundFlower (2ch) . . . now your audio will be captured as well into the same QT movie.

iPhone auto correct. Lightning became morning. I would rather misspell the word than have it change it out right into something else.

I use reflector with this method the highest resolution is 720p which matches the device's max capability. I've always had good results with reflector. It captures all the audio et.. You can also put it right in a frame of the device using the software.
