Running an ad campaign to increase downloads for your apps

I was wondering if anyone has paid to run an ad campaign through Chartboost, Revmob, or Admob?

My app currently displays ads from each of those three mentioned and I noticed that for Admob my request RPM is up over $300, but I currently only get enough downloads to earn about $1 a month.

I was thinking about spending some money to run an add campaign, but first wanted to see if anyone has any experience with doing so and could give some insight on a dollar amount they spent before they really started to see a difference in downloads.
