scrollable background causing game to lag?

in Working with GS (Mac)

hey guys
im working on a side platformer game
and so at first i had the background scrollable unchecked.
but it doesn't give it the feel that its moving

so i checked it
and put more than one image next to each other
but the problem is now its laggy and so slow
how do i achieve this without it being slow?
