How to show number as 1m instead of 1,000,000

The best example I can come up with for what I want to achieve is Clicker Heroes. I want to show a number that is constantly increasing, however instead of simply showing the number, I want to show it in standard form. For example it would show 99,999 and then to 100k. 999k to 1m and so on and so forth, automatically increasing the scale so as to limit the number of characters.
