Trouble with numeric keyboard input

So, i am trying to program my app so that the user can type in a numerical "goal" for the day. Like our basic keyboard on an iphone. for example, when "touch is pressed" (on bar), pull up keyboard from iphone, have the user insert number, then display the number on the bar. But nothing I have tried has worked. If anyone has some advise I would greatly appreciate it!
