Accelerometer - HALP!

Ok, first up - I hate accelerometer so far. HATE IT. >.<'
I've finally got things tilting in the right direction, but I need help now.
How in the name of all that is holy, is it possible to just get a nice, smooth, not horribly impossibly difficult to use, tilt control going on?
Is it friction? Is it .... One of the other two near friction? (Density? Restitution? Are those them?)
Is it some weird accelerometer setting I am missing?
I want cross-hairs that one can tilt without smashing their iDevice in frustration.
Help me out here - I'm going to bed soon and don't want to dream about it. (I do that, seriously.)
Bonus question; how to have it still at a slight angle?

I normally do it when I've been up for 30 odd hours and am more easily amused than normal.
You may also find me, at such times, using "mai" "mah" and "teh". Mostly when referring to "teh interwebs". :P
Despite how it might appear, I'm actually pretty talented when it comes to the English language; I'm a published author, in fact! (Nothing major, but still, paid work!)
Now, do you know how to help/HALP! me with my problem? :P
The problem was that the whole X, Y, plus and minus are mixed up when using the iPad a with the home button on the right hand side.
Now I can sleep without dreaming about the little red bomb actor I was using as my test subject ^-^;
