Why isn't GS free anymore?

Didn't GS use to be free? I mean you could upgrade to pro, but you could use it for free. Why did they make it $200 for the basic version?

The old pricing structure wasn't working.

We had several hundred thousand users on the free version and a very small minority paying for PRO. There are certainly cases to be made for the Freemium model, and GS was one of the earliest game tools to embrace it, but in our case, it wasn't very effective.

NB: one of the things that is lost in the discussion about the free version going away is that we also did away with the minimum 1-year subscription requirement, and created the Basic tier for folks who didn't need to pay for full publishing access up front. A lot more choices now if you want to use GS.

@boberto Better that the free version has gone away than GameSalad going away. :)
