Did he fall too far?

I have characters that fall off cliffs. How can i get the distance he falls to determine if its too much and he should go splat? I tried getting the Ypos of when he is on the cliff and the Ypos off when he landed then subtract the 2 and figure the distance that way, but it didn't work.
