If I understand you correctly, You do that in a paint program like photoshop of gimp. Then bring the image into GS as a .png file and apply it to an actor. Hope that helps?
You have to create your images or characters with no BG or cut the BG out in the paint program. Try looking at an example game and dragging an image to your desktop. Then open it in a paint program.
Wish I could afford Photoshop And my Photoshop Elements won't run on my Intel Mac! Photoline is a good, cheaper alternative... a little tricky to use but VERY powerful!
@Polygame Photoshop ain't cheap...But IMHO...there is no substitute. Perhaps if you kept your game at $1...you might be able to afford it by next week. :P

Although, I usually dual-boot into windows to run Paint.NET, another amazing AND free alternative... ;-)

Pixelmator is an inexpensive and very powerful alternative to Photoshop. I also hear good things about Acorn but I have not tried it.
