What software or application do all of you use to make game characters (players, platforms, obstacle, sound) ?

I think most use Adobe products like Photoshop or Illustrator. Others use GIMP or Fireworks.

@Icebox ,
Let us know how it goes with Aseprite if you decide to use it. I just learned about this though your post. I'd have to get the OSX version. Thanks much.

I use Affinity Photo. Cheaper than photoshop, and gets the job done very well. There's also Affinity designer, if you prefer to work with vector graphics.

I use Inkscape for almost all my art. I tend to use Photoshop for some editing, but Inkscape does the job for almost anything vector based.
Another plus is it's free
Illustrations I use iDraw now called Graphic. Only 25$ one time cost. Mac
@MentalDonkeyGames, I don't want to get off topic but how do you like the Affinity programs? Are there any issues/problems when transferring files between them and the Adobe family of products?

I mostly use Affinity Photo, and i like it a lot. I started using it when it was in open beta, and bought it right after it was released. IMO It's much more beginner friendly than photoshop, but still has pretty much the same features. Has a clean UI, but everything you need is still easy to find. It even supports photoshop plug-ins. Apple selected AP as the mac app of the year 2015.
I've only tried Affinity Designers trial version, but i'm planning on buying that too. My opinion is pretty much the same as with AP vs Photoshop,
I have not tried sharing files between affinity and adobe software, because i don't have photoshop or illustrator. I do sometimes browse the Affinity forums, and as far as i know, there's very little issues when sharing with adobe apps. One i can remember is Affinity not supporting smart layers (yet). You can get the trial versions and try yourself.

Go Animate & Inkscape.
I can also put my vote behind the affinity software. I use affinity designer and find my workflow is quicker than with illustrator (I work in vectors).
The export functionality is also super handy, easily being able to export different layers to different presets.
