If you can't run El Capitan do not install iOS 9.3. 9.3 requires Xcode 7.3 which will only run on El Capitan. I had to install it this morning to run Xcode 7.3. So if you plan on running 9.3. Be prepared to install El Capitan.

El Capitan is faster, more stable and generally smoother than Yosemite. I think there's strong reasons for sticking with Mavericks, but El Capitan is the bug-fix and stability update for the flakey Yosemite.

Good to know.
Better safe than sorry.
From another thread It appears you need Xcode 7.3 to submit to iTunes. Thus you have to update to el captain to submit?

Now there is a sweet memory! I programmed my first Mac application on a Lisa!
I have an old late 2009 model iMac 27, with a good amount of bravery I installed El Capitan and I have to say it runs better than before (Yosemite). So I would update with confidence.
BUT, I heard there were (months ago, so maybe it has been solved) a few minor issues with the Adobe CC suite. So maybe you want to look further about that, if you're a Adobe CC user

That OS 9 is just begg'n for some Norton's 3.0!!! Oh what fine times doing Apple support during that time was!!!
A good site to check compatibility of any of your existing software with El Capitan is http://roaringapps.com
They rely on user input but don't give apps the all clear until they get lots of positive reports.
I'm still using Yosemite on one iMac and Mavericks on another iMac because for a long time there were not enough reports in giving Dreamweaver CS6 and Fireworks CS6 the all clear with El Capitan. (We rely on them for website work.)
I just checked again because of this thread and am happy to say that they both work... so El Capitan here I come.
