use particles for trail?

i would like to leave a solid trail behind a character, the trail can disappear after 30 seconds or not at all.

i've been watching particles videos on youtube but keep getting spacing between particles and a smoke like effect.

1) is particles the best way to do this?
2) what settings must i focus on for solid trail?

    If it's solid I would just spawn an actor and destroy after 30 seconds. But depends on the effect you are looking for.

    1) trying to imitate grooves left on the ice when skated on. I've tried spawning actors to leave a trail but they are to "dotted" not continuous ... also they seem to really slow down the game to the point where mouse movements are too delayed.

    2) also trying to imitate the motion trail behind a ball ... using particles now but same problem, looks like a dotted line.
