If it ever achieves 100% that is... iAds might possibly die out or be rejected by devs because of the lack of incentives and the consistent lack of ad fills.
I have a feeling that mostly "junk" apps, Lite apps or shovel ware will use iAds...making it less appealing to ad buyers and thus the downward spiral progresses for iAds.
But you are right TSB...only time will tell what happens with it. For now...we are ignoring it (but keeping an eye out about it).
I wish I made 50 cents a day! More like 3 or 4 cents a day. However, if somebody, for some weird reason, actually clicks on an iAd, I make 1.30$. Which is the same as a sale of the regular version.
I have made about 34 dollars so far with iAds. Its been about three weeks.
Since 8/8/2010, I've made 11.60, averaging about $4 a day. I added iAds to an older app that I've had out about a year with over 100k downloads. I rewrote it using GameSalad and released it this week. It's nice change, but no one is going to make a living off of it.
I've been getting about a 22% fill rate, with a 1% click through rate.
I have a question. I note Firemaple stating that if someone clicked on his ad he receives $1.30.
I assume Apple takes note if u click on an ad more than once? Or not? What's to stop u continually clicking on ads in your own app, thus earning yourself cash. I'm sure its not that easy?!
Maybe we should all form some sort of collective of say 100 people, where-by each day we click on the ads in the other 99 peoples apps. Say, it takes an hour. You'd earn over £100 dollars.
iAds is dumb. I saw a study a while ago comparing free app to paid app downloads - and then click through rates and revenue from ads vs. paid app revenue. It doesn't make sense to do an ad based app from a business perspective.
Not only that - It doesn't make sense to use it from a marketing perspective either. When was the last time you EVER bought a product featured on an in-app ad? Or any web based ad? Without laser precise targeting it is just wasting pixels and annoying users.
..... When was the last time you EVER bought a product featured on an in-app ad?

When was the last time you purchased a beer from your television set?
You really need to get a little better grasp of marketing. An impression is quite valuable .....and companies know that ... and apple knows companies know that They want to be seen which is also why apple pays a small amount on impressions.
An add impression can really change things and help a company. I dont think Nissan really cares if someone buys a car from an iAd... in fact you cant.
But their new Altima has now been seen on idevices a couple million times.
People fall victom to being blasted rather they admit it or not.
10 years ago someone may not have thought twice about trying a shitty little mexican beer sitting next to the corona (depending on where you live) but, after the barrage of the most interesting man in the world, young americans go right to the dos XX.
Point being is there are issues with iAds but, a lot of things that really work, and a lot that is taking a chance.
Apple knows the world and the way we do buisiness is changing and they arent afraid to try new ways.
Noone made games for the app store at first. Why sell a game for 1.99... the blog's about how stupid developers thought it was are still floating around.
Now Apple can sell iphones at cost (vs PS3 finally reporting profit last quarter) with the money they make from the app store
....Xbox has an app store, Wii has an app store....... etc
In fact most people dont even want a device that doesn't function like an iphone.
I'm sure they copied it from somewhere but bottom line is they shoved it up the flag pole and they are now doing thay with a new approach to click ads
@James - good points. But there is a major difference between the 'most interesting man in the world' campaign and an iAd. The successful campaigns are more meaningful to consumers - it isn't something getting in their way, instead it is something providing them a benefit. In this case the benefit is entertainment. The ads are entertaining. They managed to ladder that to getting people to buy a product - which is difficult to do. I read that the old spice guy is hugely popular, but isn't providing the same boost in sales as they are seeing with the beer.
In my opinion, a company would be much better off investing in creating a branded app that is fun and provides value and benefit to their customers - rather than plastering unwanted ads all over unrelated apps.
Quick follow-up after seeing this article at Fast Company
"However, I think that Apple has found itself falling foul of exactly the same problems they called out when the unveiled iAd. The ads lack engagement and emotion. Clicking on the banner just shows you a simulated App Store page. There is nothing to draw the user in."
"According to founder David Smith, the results of an August ad campaign the firm ran for its growing AudioBooks Premium app revealed the iAd platform to be "disappointing" and financially unsustainable. TUAW parses the details:"
Essentially summarizes that I said - iAds is dumb.
Sorry, it was one of my first ever attempts at a game... In my defense I swear there were few enough doodle games to count on one had at the time though! lol
Honestly if you're worried about ad money, make better games. You stand to make multiple orders of magnitude more money with a better game vs any in game ad situation.

[ EDIT ]
Lite versions that is.
His paid versions have no ads.
iAds is not a saving grace. You still need 10 of 1000s of downloads to generate any worthwhile revenue.
Give it up and go on with making good games that sell for $1.

Am I talking nonsense?
Lets beat the system!
