Recommendation for storing GS cloud data?

I have a kids' educational app I've been working on (on and off) for a couple years. One of the key features is that it tracks student use in an in-app database so that teachers can check student progress. I'd like to move that database to the cloud so that teachers don't have to log on to an individual student's iPad to check each time.

What do people use for that? Is @jonmulcahy's SQL server method still the best way to do that? I checked @Hopscotch's AppFormative but it doesn't seem like it has that feature -- or maybe it does but is overkill?
