Beats Per Minute - how to calculate acceleration to match BPM?

I'm working on a project that displays song lyrics. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to calculate the acceleration needed to move at a speed that matches the BPM? I'm trying to figure out the best way to set up a BPM controller where you can either 1) enter the number of beats per minute or 2) adjust the BPM using a slider. @Socks and @Guru, have any tricks for setting up this functionality?
