universal iphone ipad development technique

I was wondering if you guys use any techniques when developing games for ipad and iphone. I make one skeleton project that has all the logic for iphone and then make a copy for ipad and design the levels separately. But when I have to make an update I have to apply the changes separately on each project. Does any one use any technique such that making changes on one projects affects the other so I don't have to make change manually. The method I use is painful when I add new features.
