XML files are huge - and what exactly are they?

What is the purpose of XML files. They are huge - 5MB or more.
What are they and can I reduce the size of them?

    That's how we store your game logic. Not gonna change anytime soon, but once Creator 2.0 has a clean upgrade path from 1.25, we'll be moving to json for game storage which should save some space and maybe, I can hope to have the time to do so, we'll move to a binary game format.

    The XML files within a project file are where all of the rules are stored. I'm not sure why yours are 5MB (each?).
