IAP subscription. What happens when sub not renewed?

If you have a subscription IAP and the subscription is not renewed, does the purchase status automatically revert back to un-purchased? I want to avoid situation where user opts out of sub but can still access app. I can't really find any info on how to ensure this does not happen. The sub is through Apple. 3 months duration, auto renewable and can be canceled anytime.

    The field should revert to unpurchased.
