Plasma Ball?

Anyone have any ideas for how to make a plasma ball - a sphere with a glowing center, that creates tendrils reaching to the touched area(s) when one or more touches are placed on it?

    There are several ways of making this kind of effect. But it will have to start with a nice lightning animation.

    Unfortunately GS doesn't have a glow effect..
