Inventory system

Hello,
Could you tell me how did you make inventory system to your game (I'm asking especially people who are making or made point&click adventure game)?
My interface looks like that: one mini menu with few buttons, one of them is inventory button, after player hits this button, inventory belt appears in right side of the screen.
I have an idea to make this belt invisible, and after clicking inventory button, this belt become visible.
And second case - items. I'm going to make something like that: player taps on item, actor destroyes, and creates another actor in inventory belt.
Is it right way, or maybe you have better ideas?
