I handed over my $20 a while back even though the mac version is very new i found out there busy porting there C++ runner to iPad/Phone.

I have been using gamemaker for years it's so easy and very similar to GS (imagine GS but with an option to code and almost every feature you want for a 2d game and that's gamemaker, simply amazing).

I was looking at that earlier too.

I'm a little confused by the "Runner" aspect of it though. Although I assume it's much the same as the GS "Engine"?????

Also be interesting to see how easy/possible it is to add stuff like openfient etc

    Interesting stuff.

Game Maker was the first game making app I used, back when I had a PC.

I downloaded the demo for Mac - and to be honest, I just got really confused. My colleague Jake uses it all the time on PC though, and has made some very cool games!

Hopefully he can make some stuff with GM while I plough on with GS - and we'll flank the app store ;)

    Good news though!

Yes it's like GS (drag n drop) but with a lot more options like snap to grid, png collision, arrays, fantastic physics engine, easy save game without writing a ton of integers etc etc.

I noticed how fast it change scenes in the demo, it was almost instant!

    Darren,

How serious is the development community at yoyo? It looks like it's a load of people using copyrighted material to make their own games for fun - which is fine.

But it makes me wonder what will happen if they get this iphone thing off the ground. Are there people there that make 'proper' games?

    QS :D

Last time i was active in the forums just under a year ago it was on the low side for serious devs and a lot of the users are kids playing around but we made the PC version of Bumps in GameMaker so it's like GS as in crap can be made and also good games can be made.

I think it's got a very bright future if they get the pricing right.

Great Thread Guys just wondering I saw that you can download it for the mac for a free trial but does that mean you can create iphone games.

@kirk1234: Hey kirk sure you can download it for mac but you can't make iPhones games yet they just got that part working have you used it before it's cool.

No I never used it before,, is it easy like GS,, and do you know when is their release date for iphone development.

I made a game with it before I found GS and the thing I hated about it was that at the time it did not accept transparent pngs (or pngs at all if remember right). So it dealt with transparency by having you select a color that would become transparent by having the 1st pixel (lower left) determine what equals transparent. So if the bottom left pixel was white, then every white pixel in the jpg would be transparent. I HATED this! MY game played fine and it wasn't too hard to make, but it looked like crap!

So my question is - does GM use pngs now?

So i went looking around the site and cannot find where you can get a version for iOS devices. Is this something thats is out right now in any form? That ipad game looked pretty cool so if its easy like GS that would be awesome. and then be able to have code edited beyond that would be great.

It's not my fault I never learned to take responsibility for anything. ;)

As far as I can tell.. the IOS stuff is still a work in progress.

No details of a release date and pricing etc.

I like the way the demo is 10 hours of non consecutive usage...a really good way to evaluate if it's worth the $25......then again, $25 is uber cheap.

Wow, a very good tool. Hope GM for iPhone will be released soon

If current GM enthusiasts port their games to the iPhone, we're in trouble. The list of GM games is a lot longer, although when you're not developing for a mobile platform and have to worry about optimization, its a ton easier.

    Nonetheless, I'm stoked :D

    Hey Darren.
are there any decent tutorials for it online? Be interesting to check it out properly.
I loaded it up, and it looks pretty similar to GS, but with some added scripting abilities.

I also think it will be interesting to see how they price the IOS stuff.

At the mo, the software is $25 (cheap), so I can't see them giving away the ability to publish to IOS for nothing (Especially when you consider that YoYo Games have cumulative "debts" of almost £1/2 mill. > http://gamemakerblog.com/2010/08/08/yoyo-games-ltd-almost-break-even-in-year-to-october-2009/

My best guess would be a yearly sub. But they could go down the route of charging "per build" which I am sure some other engines do, or even some kind of publishing via them for casual users, with a higher yearly sub for pro users.

Hard to know really, as it seems like they have only just announced the IOS thing as working.

Looked great from the video though performace-wise (although it didn't look like tooooo performance taxing)
I especially liked how it all loaded and changed scenes/rooms really fast.

    Mark.

Theres loads of open source games demos and examples available and also the forum is massive with loads of people willing to help out.

Not sure about price but if they get it right it will be a winner for sure.

Yeah i was looking at the tutorials, and they look very detailed, and great with explanation. They had tutorials from simple games, to platformers, and shooters.

    Definintely looks promising!

Theres also a good selection of very useful and comprehensive books available for GameMaker too.... some of which are co-written by the actual engine developers.

I found the Game Maker's Apprentice to be a very good instructional book, and theres a more advanced version called the Game Maker's Companion.
  • butterbeanbutterbean Posts: 4,315Member, PRO
    @ChunkyPixels: That's good to know :)

I went ahead and purchased the full license, after having played around with it for a few hours. For $25 bucks you really can't lose, and it's good to have alternatives.

Just done one of the simple tutorials.
Seems pretty nice. Very logical. Fairly similar to "Multimedia Fusion" on the PC.

/comes back to the warm inviting glow of the GS forum
