Here are a few screenshots of what Im working on.

Its a " See how long you can survive" style space game. With upgrages to speed, steering,
shields, and fuel capacity. It will have a currency based off of gem collection for credits.

Scoring is based on Light Years or Parsecs traveled, to stay in line with the theme.

Game Center - LeaderBoards - Achievements

These arent the final shots. But Im close. I am not a graphics artist by far. But I do the best I can with the tools I have.
I just wish I could learn illustrator or corel draw inside and out. But Im so use to my good ole PhotoImpact 13.

Thanks. What is the steps to show the images here and not having to click on a individual link?

Looks good! I like the fonts, too.

    There's quite a few spelling/grammer errors in the images . . .

    'manuvering' should read: 'maneuvering'.

    'InCrease' should read: 'Increase'.

    UpGrade should read: 'Upgrade'.

    'Modulater' should read" 'Modulator'.

'Demons Run' should read 'Demon's Run'.

    . . .

Yep, the Dropbox links won't work, you need to upload your images to somewhere like Tinypic.

No, there are hundreds of image hosting websites, use whichever you want.

I corrected the spelling of manuvering. This is a older image. And I know about the extra capital letters . I liked the font better that way. And Ive always been confused about the DEMONS or DEMONS' or DEMON'S

I will of course always double check all grammar and spelling before i release a app into the wild. This is just a work in progress.

So Socks.. What do you think about the graphics? Spelling aside?

What kind of review do you want - brutally honest or supportive/encouraging ?
  • FINNBOGGFINNBOGG Posts: 1,809Member
Brutally honest... But with the knowledge that I am not a graphics designer. And can afford them. Every dollar given to a graphics guy is that many more downloads I have to get to break me even.

Well, I was planning to review the graphics rather than who made them, that is - after all - how your audience will see them, they won't first find out about the author, their age, their experience as a graphic designer, the budget they had to work with (and so on) . . . . and then decide whether they like the graphics or not.

    So . . . . brutally honest 8-X (with no provisos) or supportive/encouraging =D> ?

    :D

@jeffnichols there is an attach file button in the forum. At least I have one. Why not use that?
You get tiny pics but when you click on it it enlarges.

Just to be 'my usual painful' self... and no... it's not just to disagree with the earlier posts... It's not looking good... it's bloody inconsistent, all over the place and art gone horribly wrong.

    Let me pick on screen:
    image

It starts with the font choice... It's a font that might work for headlines (and markings on spaceships) but that's where it ends. The white subline is barely readable.

Light and shadow - the light for the left hand UI element comes from the top left with a rim light from below. The button next to it - besides being totally flat with a hard chiseled edge that's not matching the other UI elements. It's totally unclear what is important and what's clickable.
The big return button at the base is different again... lights coming from the top left again - yet it's a button.

Oddly the panel background with the diagonal lines is the element with the most visual detail and it's a background.

I would have a look at the art and try and work out what's important, what's clickable and what's just decor. Clickable/ touchable objects should stand out and be consistent and recognizable as a button.

Ive really never paid attention to the light direction of my objects. Im glad you mentioned that. Ive never been schooled on how to judge color schemes and what works with what, I just simply make it as I go and say that look neat. I guess I would be the guy in the back drawing the rough draft sketches. Except I dont use pen and pad. And you would be the final editor. This started out as a art deco " Sticker Space Wars type game. But no one was liking the flat color theme. So I started with a more 3D effect.

Sprite... was any of it good? Like I said Im self taught with using PhotoImpact. Its not even a vector based software.

For some reason I feel like I cant take credit for my app. If I dont do everything. Especially the art. And I save so much money if i do the art myself. Every dollar toward art is that much in downloads i have to do to break even.

    @jeffnichols you wrote:
"And Ive always been confused about the DEMONS or DEMONS' or DEMON'S"
    Here's the basic breakdown...

DEMONS- is talking about a group of demons, like, "Hey look over there! There's a lot of demons coming our way!"

DEMON'S- is essentially possession. Meaning something relating to the demon itself. Example: "The demon's ring was bright red." Or "The demon's favorite color is black." If you were to use the same sentence but use "demons" instead of "demon's" it would imply ALL of the demons favorite color is black,

DEMONS'- When something ends in a plural sound and or has an S (for example) at the end of it, its odd to add another plural sound to it. Which is one of the reasons for having the ' at the end of a word/name. Give you an example.

This is the proper way to use it...
"Mr. Jones' favorite color is blue."

What the sentence would look like IF we didn't have the ' at the end of it...
"Mr. Joneses favorite color is blue."

Because his name already ends with an S, we can't do... "Mr. Jone's favorite color is blue."
Because then that would mean his name was Mr. Jone.

    Make sense?

I am by no means a grammar expert but I thought id shoot you some help.

Ok in in this case when its a stretch of space thats uncharted and had been given the name "Demons Run" how do you use the "s"
  • SocksSocks London, UK.Posts: 12,822Member

OK. sure Hit me with it. Brutal honesty.

Ok, overall I'd say it doesn't really work.

I'll use the above menu ('Hanger Bay') as my working example.

The first thing that hits you is the disjointed colour palette, there are no hard and fast rules with colour, it is after all a matter of taste, but to me it's not a pleasant combination, a bit of a chromatic mess to be honest: olive, three different reds, orange, grey, cyan, black, white.

    image

Like I say, there are no rules here, but let's just say I won't be getting a jumper with that particular colour combination :)) This might come in useful:

    http://colorschemedesigner.com

The diagonal lines on the grey panels unfortunately buy into a well known optical illusion - they make your panels and your type look as if they are not quite horizontal.

The line spacing is very uncomfortable, words are pushed up against the tops of your panels with great areas of empty space on the lower left.

Nothing stands out as wanting your attention, everything is competing with everything else.

The font is not particularly legible (although it fits the space theme), but this illegibility is compounded by your odd use of capitalisation ('InCrease' / 'UpGrade').

As others have pointed out your embossed panels are lit from arbitrary directions . . .

. . . and few other things, but generally speaking I'd say it was a little messy and incoherent.
