Video: Hints of Gamesalads future? Joints, magnetism etc.. 2D Physics engine in after effects.

Hi all....

Just started using a new physics engine plugin for Adobe after effects called 'Newton 2'. It kind of gives a look at what Gamesalad might be like in the future (2D joints, pixel collisions, magnetism) as well as allow you to recreate some gamesalad style physics in your promo videos right now.

I'm an animator by trade, and long time game salad user (3 years 3 months and counting)...

I use adobe After effects (+ 3d packages, and pencils) everyday to produce promo videos for all sorts of things (drugs, beers, Christmas, charity etc).

The little promo video shows what it can do.. and part of it wants me to see if we can make a vehicle with tracks in gamesalad.

Here's a link to their full page show how joints work and stuff like that.

Anyway thought I'd share it. It means my animation work today might be slightly more destructive.... but first I'm also using another less new plugin that makes videos look cool and techy... Plexus.... depth of field... animated wireframe meshes.. oooh

    @stormystudio

Hi Jon, thanks v.m for the heads up on this one; terrific stuff; here's hoping Newton2's capabilities will be really beneficial for your future video projects. :-)

We can only dream for all of this stuff in GameSalad one day.... as far as I know though, Box2D isn't being added to anytime soon... don't know where I got that idea from and so if it's right or not....

We're promised joints though, aren't we! Maybe once we get that, springs, pistons and pivets might not be too long in arriving, being related....

I wonder if it'd be not too difficult for the GSC team to produce a Magnetic Behaviour... that'd be cool... (+useful... B-) )

How frickin' cool is that .. I was imagining that was GS for a minute whilst watching that and was getting so many crazy ideas for games!

glad you both appreciate it... I agree that the magnetism idea brings loads of ideas to the table... I reckon that would be possible at the moment with the right rules...

Certain your right, Jon; still, a dedicated "attractor" behaviour would sure simply things and make more complicated arrangements easier, wouldn't it! Fingers crossed we get that one day. :-)

Thanks for sharing the link. Pretty neat, does any one know what they use under the hood? Is it using a existing engine or did they write one from scratch?

    @BlackCloakGS

    Newton is based on Box2D.

Also I would guess you set up your simulation - then bake it to AE keyframes, so it's probably not running in real time (but I expect there is a preview of some kind).

ic, not to be confused with this Newton physics engine?
or is this one in the same?

    Socks is correct.

    - You arrange your scene
    - Set up each object to be dynamic, static, kinematic etc....
    - Press preview and watch what happens,
    - adjust positions until, you get what your after
    - then apply it to your scene and it produces keyframes for it all... 'baking' in the animation..

(or at least thats how it worked on earlier versions, I'm yet to try version 2).

@BlackCloakGS... good find there.... obviously a popular name for all things physics..

    Motion Boutique's Newton 2 uses box 2D.

This stuff has been around for years (but you probably knew that already), things like 'Phun' (which I think I still have a copy of somewhere) had joints and motors and polygonal collisions (and all that stuff) back in 2006 (?)

Damn cant wait too have some cool things to play with like joints

nice to see everyone likes it...

@gsrockz123.... not that I really care either way but Vimeo is actually pretty ideal for hosting video.... it's html5 based so works nicely if you view your embedded player on a website... so plays nice with an ipad etc... you can pay to have the video player unbranded... upload one HD file and it will create all the different resolutions for you... and I'm not 100% sure but I don't think I've ever seen an annoying in video advert at the beginning of their vids... your video isn't mixed in with 10 million cat videos... and people can share the videos easily...

Anyway.... joints would be amazing .. I think...

@stormystudio Youtube can be a hassle but man that was amazing! Hope gamesalad would get something like that but it might be too much to ask. The reason why i said was because the last time i used vimeo, the performance was awful.

I think joints in GS is a long long way off (if its here within 12 months i will eat my hat lol) and im not 100% sure we could have too many joints when we get them so a rope swinging with 20+ actors might not even be possible but hope im wrong.

    Darren.

  • beefy_clyrobeefy_clyro Posts: 5,390Member
I think we will be limited with Joints too but damn I hope you're wrong Darren!
  • StormyStudioStormyStudio United KingdomPosts: 3,987Member
yep agree we will no doubt be limited on what we can do with joints when they do arrive... though perhaps when the re-written GS is up and running it may be able to handle one rope with 20 joints... just maybe... then I can make that brilliant rope game idea I've not had yet...

This looks great! The sooner we get joints the better. I know stencyl have a really simple way of integrating them, maybe the GS team could have a look at! Imagine the possibility with joints... rope based games, 2d car/bike simulation games... it'd be amazing!
