I'm trying to earn a full-time living using Gamesalad, follow my progress on my new blog :)

Hi all,

I'll try and keep this short! So I've been using Gamesalad on and off since about late 2009, and I've made plenty of demos and attempts in that time, but not much else.

Fast forward to today and my wife and I are expecting our first child, and we can't wait. I've always had a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit about me, but never the conviction to do much with it. Knowing that I'm about to become a dad has finally given me the push I need, so I'm throwing everything Ive got at becoming a full-time indie game developer (using Gamesalad for the foreseeable future), to earn my family and I the chance to live the lives we want without having to work for somebody else.

I know it might sound like a dream to some people but I'm confident in my abilities, and pretty determined once I have a plan.

I'm going to be blogging throughout the whole experience, on topics ranging from game design, the business and personal aspects of trying to become self-sufficient, and anything else that takes my fancy along the way. I've just posted my first blog post today and I'd love to get some opinions on it from you guys, and maybe some comments and shares if you're feeling generous :)

Anyway the link to the first post is below, sorry it's a bit wordy but I had a lot to get down, future posts shouldn't be nearly as long! Thanks guys.

Obviously the link once I've added more posts will just be

PS I'm still tinkering with the blog theme / infolinks at the moment so any opinions would be more than welcome!

Congrats on the baby and good luck making all this work. I'm in the same boat with you minus the baby. Using GameSalad while I learn Unity. Started a small studio here in Seattle. Just moved into our new office space. :)

@DepressedPanda you have office space already, that's pretty awesome! My office space will be the desk in the corner of our living room until I've earned a fair amount from my games!

Bad idea. The likelihood that you will make a living with GameSalad is like 1 in 100. Making a living with Xcode is different. Knowing xcode actually gives you value in a contract/client setting. You shouldn't do this, especially if you have a child on the way. Get a stable job, and do this part time. The risk is too high if you have to support a family and your project fails.

If you don't take my advice, best of luck to you. I'm sure everyone here will be supporting you, and I will too. Looking forward to reading your blog every once in awhile.

Take it from a Father of two one is now 22 the other 16 they grow up fast so savor every moment. Right now I'm do game developing full time. It's not easy but from what I've learned about successful people is when faced with setbacks and failures instead of giving up they worked even harder. This is the biggest challenge to being self employed, you have to be very self motivated and be able to push yourself harder than anyone else could. good luck and best wishes.

Congrats on the baby and best of luck BoomshackBarry! Also not to be a spoil sport but having a stable job as a backup plan would also be a good idea for a young family...!

Thanks all for the kind words and advice!

To clarify: I'm ambitious but not crazy reckless - like it says on my blog (I wouldn't blame any of you if you didn't read it :D ) I do currently have a 9-5 job. I'll be starting this game dev plan in the evenings and weekends around my day job at first, and I definitely won't be giving up the day job until I can get a stable source of income from the games (my wife wouldn't let me for a start)!

Also @poisenden I'll be clarifying more in future blog posts, and the title of this forum post may mislead a bit, but as this is intended as a game plan for my entire life I certainly won't only be using Gamesald. I'll be using it for the foreseeable future whilst teaching myself to code on the side to give myself many more options, I have a blog post coming up about that soon.

@FryingBaconStudios you're right about dealing with the setbacks, I've been reading a few self-improvement blogs lately and that's the general message from most of them! Great advice about savouring every moment too :)

@firemaplegames thanks for the encouragement, watching your success and reading a couple of interviews you've given has definitely spurred me on recently.

@everyone else thanks for the support :)

Great blog post... good luck with it all... I'm making the jump myself from full time to freelance in the new 2 to 3 weeks... the move has been 3 years in the making and its time to jump and risk it all (it's a well planned gamble...)...

Thanks Jon, and thanks for your great comment on the blog! I've seen some of your work and with the experience you've got I'd say it's a pretty safe gamble, I'm sure you'll do well! Dropping you an email shortly...

@BoomshackBarry Your blog is interesting to read. It'll be a while before I'll have to make a decision for what I want to do as a job, but it's cool to see that it's possible to have a job being an app developer :)
  • BoomshackBarryBoomshackBarry Posts: 712Member
Thanks @HalfBakedProductions, I'm only just starting out so it'll be a while before I can give up my day job but there are others doing it very well so it's totally possible. You're starting out so early you've got a great opportunity ahead of you!

Really good read man. Keep posting here when you blog, and I'll keep following your progress.
Carter Thomas's model is interesting. On one hand it's great and perfect business sense - but at the same time my desire to create something worthwhile, and to be proud of, makes it seem unsavoury. Makes you think...
  • BoomshackBarryBoomshackBarry Posts: 712Member
Thanks @Digichain, it really is a kind of light side/dark side thing, but I'm trying to walk the middle ground. Thanks for reading it and posting your thoughts, it's always tough to get feedback when your blog's just starting out!

@BoomshackBarry What a long read, good luck. Remember polish to be proud of is better than what that guy you admire does. I personally don't like the idea of re skinning games but you gotta make money somehow. I guess it depends on your values.
    Look forward to part two.

Of course you know he uses revmob and chartboost, both of which are not compatible with gamesalad :(
