Pokemon style walking around help?

Hi guys, I'm trying to design a 2D birds eye view adventure game (along the lines of Pokemon) but I cant figure out how to make the camera keep the actor in the middle of the screen as this large map moves around him, I've tried making the player stationary and using the controls to move the map so it still looks like he is walking but it just doesn't look right ... also this large map image tends to not show which I am guessing means the file size is too big?
Any advice??

    You'll need to adjust camera controls, this video gives an explanation:

    And yes, there is a limit on the size of textures (2048x2048, is I remember correctly), anything bigger will not show. You will need to break the image into smaller pieces.
