So.....Corona, GameMaker or something else?

Just wondering with the latest news and all that now is probably a good time to start thinking about (and learning) a new tool in order to continue as an 'indie dev' on the App store.

So which of the alternatives is the easiest to get your head around and offer the best features etc?

You might want to consider developing for the desktop. Think about it, there are more desktop computers than mobile phones, no middleman, 100% of the profits and a wider range of development options. You have the opportunity to submit it to Steam. You also don't have to worry about memory management as much, computers have enough memory these days to handle a lot.

I would go with Game Maker. The next best thing compared to GS. (Drag N' Drop)

That is where I'm planning on heading, along with desktop app development.

I'm looking Forward to seeing what happens with Rocket Pack, it reminds me of a young Game Salad!

Haha ehhh.... did you hear what happened to GameSalad?

    :p

Ahh but by then if Rocketpack learns from GS mistakes, it will take a different path, fingers crossed!

Game Maker is good, but they iOS part of it isn't even out yet, and who's to say it's very good or they won't pull something like GS just did?

Yeah, I guess don't get your socks in a knot yet. With GM we'll have to wait and see. I think personally, since I began to program, I may as well put my nose to the grindstone and just work with cocos2d or corona. :( We just started working with GS. Now we may have to scrap our current progress. At least we still have the assets. Poo.

I'm between Corona, Unity or Cocos2D.. Maybe we could team up to learn unity? :)

I have used unity for some time now.
I have released a game with open feint and my current project is ALMOST done
and has Gamecenter and you can post your high socres right to your wall.

after trying just about everything exrtensivly I went with unity for one huge reason

    support...

    Folow me here lol...

Game Center, iAds, Facebook, twitter - none of that is built into any of those engines. You HAVE to know Xcode to add them. Since unity has become an industry standard there are countless sites that make and sell assets you can use like game center support.

Cocos2D offers some support in that nature but nothing like Unity.

Bottom line is you have to learn some coding so why not go with the one with the most support.

I had pretty much transitioned away from game salad months ago but still kept it in mind for future projects but i see no reason now.

After less than a year i can easily code anything in unity i could make in game salad and nearly as fast now.

you can try version 3 for a month.

Reading books on coding WILL NOT get you ahead.
Applying little bits as you go will teach you everything you need to know.

There are amazing tutorials on unity's site that will take you from knowing nothing to building mario galaxy step by step.

It is daunting learning to code but, you will not find an easier way to learn.

Plus why not learn 2d and 3d at the same time. The rules are the same anyways. Code is Code.

Has anyone used iTorque or know if it's any good?

Think I'll gradually start learning unity, probably in the new year!

    Complete garbage

Anyone who tells you otherwise probably doesn't actually have a game on the app store.
the forums are packed with people who cant even get a game to compile because its so buggy.

It has potential but , I wouldnt even consider it beta yet.

I spent months trying to get into it. Nothing works. It's amazing how bad it is.

Lol, Unity it is then :)

Seems that's the way everyone else is going... I'm a sheep, ah well... We all know the classic saying "A sheep who uses Unity is better than a duck eating a pickled onion"

Maybe it's not that well known, but it should be.

So Unity seems to be the most popular. Should have added that to the poll :)

Having looked at it I am unsure as to what version I would need as an indie dev as it seems to range from free for Unity to $1500+ extras for the Pro versions?

    $500 which is unity3 basic

Can publish to Mac, Pc, Web, and iphone with the splash screen.
But plugins are 3rd party so the most popular ones like game center and iads work on the basic version. Pro features are things like realtime shadow rendering in 3d and streaming asset bundles (If you dont understand streaming asset bundles than you dont need them lol)

I'm probably gonna get kicked off the forums for saying all that but oh well...

Programming isnt for everyone so I dont think GS is too worried.

At this point i think there market is for the masses to make their first few games and move on anyways.

Good niche for those who want to dabble in game development

Here's a thought - if you've an idea for a game that you think is worthwhile, why not knock something up in GameSalad in the meantime under the new agreement? Your upfront cost to submit to the App Store is minimal, your development time far less than that required to learn a new tool, and once you earn the $450-plus revenue (as best I can make out, the minimum required to jump ship - Corona subscription plus iOS Dev account) then make haste to jump ship to the new dev environment of your choosing. This makes the process as good as free (compared to leaving now with nothing), plus you've something of an established fan base (at least, an installed user base) to whom you can promote your new apps with the pro-level URL linking you now get at no extra cost…

This, of course, assumes you've got a decent idea, and the commitment to high standards to carry it off well, like the best GS developers do. GameSalad as gateway drug to semi-pro development?

Just making sure, with rocket engine you can publish games to the app store, right?
  • synthesissynthesis Member Posts: 1,693
Rocket Engine doesn't exist yet. Its still experimental and Alpha invitation testing only.
  • BramHoddssdBramHoddssd Member Posts: 414
I know but do u know if you'll be able to when it's out? Or will it only be able to make games for the web?
  • synthesissynthesis Member Posts: 1,693
What is on the website is all that anyone knows about it...unless they are an approved alpha tester.

@jameszeppelin saw your paper monsters gameplay video on youtube. looks really nice!
how long it took for you to go from Gamesalad to that in unity?
just downloaded unity, and will start playing around with it.

As I´m just focused on 2D games (and GameMaker won´t be available for quite some time, I suppose) I´ll stick with cocos2d. I have all the freedom I want, it´s very good, not too complicated and above all it´s completely free.

    GS has died for me...

Thanks but sorry I'm still a little lost? On their website it says....

    Unity - Free
    Unity Pro - $1500

    Addons...

    iOS - $400
    iOS Pro - $1500
    Android Pro - $1500
Asset Server Client Server - $500

Am I right in thinking I need Unity basic + iOS for iPhone dev?
  • LAdrianLAdrian Member Posts: 237
    I'll go with Unity.
Most likely I'll partner with a friend that knows how to program but I also want to learn some for myself... at least the basics.
Unity seems to have the brightest future and after a quick look on they forum it looks like they really care about the community.
Since I need to learn some programming anyway I see no reason why I would choose Corona (please, if anyone know why/how is Corona better than Unity let me know, I'm interested in this) - Unity is capable of making 2d games, or actually 3d games that looks 2d (ZombieVille for example).
I still can't believe what happened and what's worst, after doing this GS still treats us like garbage!
