Random Runner Template for sale

edited November -1 in Working with GS (Mac)
Hello gentlemen! I have been working on my own running template which i still plan on pushing through as a full game and have spent a lot of time getting the control to feel right.

In my running template the platforms are recycled and randomly generated as well as the enemy mainly for reasons of variety in each play and its nice on performance.

The player can jump, doublejump, attack and stomp. The movement is quite dexterous which is what i thought was lacking in the games released these days. I play it myself, probably too much but maybe im biased, probably why i still haven't finished it!

I'll try my best to answer any questions you may have. Reason for selling is basically I'm utterly broke and can't invest the time i'd like currently to do the artwork for the game to get it published, at least for the next few weeks-id like to eat until then, hopefully a few people will be interested. I know there are one or two pre-existing running templates but i haven't (couldn't) test them.

Here is a quick video I made:

If you have trouble with youtube, here is the video (6.5MB) http://www.fileserve.com/file/DJ4mhhw

Paypal is yasir.said [at] gmail.com and cost is $12 today for the current template + updates - I can't stop working on this game so there will be a few updates to come!

Once payment sent, ill email you the template within 24 hours, usually much much less.

There are a lot of endless runner templates already for sale, as well as the free one by Darren which is great

Thank you for your comment mynameisace. As I mentioned there are a few running templates I'm aware of. Priced at $50, another template for $25 which has a problem i noticed - the player pushes back the platforms if he collides side-on. I had this problem, among others as well but managed to fix it (check my video at 25s). I haven't tried Darren's since last i heard it was sold as part of a larger mega pack which ran quite a bit.

I have seen videos of all the runner templates available, and believed mine is sufficiently different as well as fun to be sold here, not only that but it's pretty cheap for what it is! (currently $12). It's not my intention to rag on other templates at all especially since I haven't tried them but i'm all about...my template!
Which i am quite proud of...only wish I could play it on my iphone! Hoping to raise some money to go towards the developers license for apple.

I've been heavily focussed on the gameplay of the template since the start, laying off the artwork since that can change at any time with my ideas. I wanted to make a responsive, skilled run & jump game with a bit more flexibility over the control of the character.

    Thanks again

So you joined a couple days ago, never made a game before, but your selling a template

While your template looks interesting I think its a bit irresponsible to be selling a template you have never tested on a device.
  • mangaroomangaroo Member Posts: 419
@JohnPapiomitis Yes, I registered a few days ago and this is my first developed game, and I'm selling the template. I looked at the other running templates on sale to compare them in terms of quality/bugs/gameplay. The video should be enough but ill explain what is involved:

-Jumping - Player can jump twice before landing to jump again. The jump is flexible in terms of timing the landing, something more apparent in-game but observable to a certain degree in the video
    -Recycled enemy for performance
    -Recycled platforms for performance
-Random generation of aspects (speed/size/distance/colour) of the platform and enemies (speed/height) to produce a varied experience each playthrough
-Fixing the position of the actor, unless hit by the side of the platform
    -Scoring system
    -Pause+reset buttons
-spawning an actor under conditions as an attack
    -Particle effects, stomping movement
-rules for collision with enemy to account for various situations
-Not to mention other small issues, all with the correct rules and attributes to get it working together to produce the result seen in the above video.

The game actually also includes an end goal, springs to boost up as well as a slow-mo icon but since i revamped the game to be a random playthrough instead of levels they didn't appear in the video.

    My todo list:

    -falling platforms incorporated randomly
    -springs incorporated randomly
-increasing difficulty based on time sustained
-showing the best score of various playthroughs

@tenrdmer - Thank you. I understand what you are saying about not testing it on a device. I would if i could, however I used the gamesalad preview extensively. Most of the actors are recycled in the game so performance should be flawless as it appears on the preview in gamesalad. Should is not definite - but i see no stuttering in-game (after much fixing) and of course i am continuing to work on this and can't wait to have it on my phone.

Thank you for your comments, will try my best to answer any more questions from anyone with interest!

    Mangaroo,
Looks like you did a great job your first time out.
If you did this after only joining a few days ago I can only imagine the great things you will be doing over time. I wish you success in earning enough to become an Apple Developer!
  • JohnPapiomitisJohnPapiomitis Member Posts: 6,256
the preview does NOT reflect how it will be on the actual device, at all. Things that will crash on the device will run perfect on the preview. You need to get more experience, join the dev program, and get the viewer and all that working before you try to sell templates.

@boscomadison Thank you very much for your kind words. It is true i have been working on this for a few days, however when i have real work to do (like my over-due coursework) i can focus on procrastinating quite a lot! Thank you again for your support.

@JohnPapiomitis - Your concern for early adopters is understandable and i agree in principle with what you are saying. I know some of the other template producers have more experience under their belt so early adopters of mine may get burned - i reflected this in the current price of my template.
Although i am new, i have solved a few problems that I came across which will hopefully (im sure) save somebody else some time or help in some way. With continual work on this template i am hoping to submit to apple - hopefully i will be able to meet the higher expectations of other members here. I understand people have been irritated with template sales for a variety of reasons.

Also the first email has been sent shortly after receiving payment. Thank you dearly for your support and interest - it reinstalls some confidence!

I wanted to clarify something - currently this is designed to have user-created platforming with the various components necessary too. Tomorrow I will be starting the project from scratch just to make it more efficient and template/copying friendly - and incorporating some new ideas involving a replacement for the walking stick! - instead i will be using the colour attribute of the last block the character landed on to chuck a block at the enemy.

The game is sufficiently bug-free and replayably fun as it is so I'm happy to send it out for people to play with, but i didnt want people to copy the template fully and just replace the graphics - that template im working on for tomorrow in mind (the one from scratch). All updates are free so no worries.

Also I wanted to mention that the animation for the main character running is from a popular free platformer template on gamesalad. I've set up the rules for the image changes for the character - any animations will do :) I was thinking stick men... And the reason for the walking stick is that i was planning on having the main character be an old man in a powerful wheelchair but put that on hold for now! (you can briefly see a concept image when the actor stomps!).

The game is not easy by any means...the jump gives makes timing the landing quite flexible but requires some dexterity...ill leave you to figure out exactly that in the actor controls section - might help your run...that or a lot of practice :) I didn't want an easy game - you dont if you are going to replay it a lot, look at Boost 3D...one of the classics! Although That has to be flexible and will be when remade. Currently I recommend this template for the character movement/rules - enemy collisions - platforms etc. As I mentioned not yet fully a copy and paste :)

this whole thread reminds me of a guy walking into a star trek convention without being a hard core fan: he gets written off by a niche group of people holding desperately to their world. jeez dont like the template, dont buy it, pretty simple really. good job for a first time i think, i couldnt do it. i buy the templates and modify them to suit my needs and add graphics. when this one is device worthy, ill give it a buy!
  • mangaroomangaroo Member Posts: 419
Thank you sugawara, your avatar and kind words (also a couple of purchases) have been encouraging! I feel a bit like that probably only due to lack of actual critique in some otherwise distant comments, but i suppose this is a sale thread!
On a side note im not sure how I can edit the first post anymore it seems with a new description video & price for when I implement the features i have in mind. ill make the template more reproducible and publishable too (although it will be a little longer before i can do ios testing) within the next 2 days!

Also not sure about the star trek convention but it is a bit eerie..

Rocket boots - extra jump...has to be added

Working on including some springs and possibly this vortex thing i happened to do today, hopefully some nice examples people can work with - would be good to show different techniques!

    in next update:

just the springs at work here:

No one has an issue with anyone selling a template. but someone who's been here for a week and is not even setup to test on a device should not be selling a template since it has the potential to destroy the credibility of the entire marketplace. I think its irresponsible to even offer it without testing on a device.

It looks like a fine template, but if you cannot guarantee device performance then you shouldn't be selling it.
  • mangaroomangaroo Member Posts: 419
Many of the techniques used here i have determined to often be used by other developers including to maintain performance. Templates are often bought for a variety of reason including learning how to do various aspects of game design. Not only that but it is $12 (=£6.30 in paypal)...including the full disclosure of being untested yet promising continued updates.

not to mention no complaints so far *hope this doesn't encourage some emails* although people have been very nice here from gamesalad!

Ok fellas, added some new things today:

Touch Controls implemented + Swipe for stomping
    Camera move during stomping
Integration of falling platforms and warps

    PayPal Link ($12)

    image

    next on todo:
    parallax scrolling of bg
    permanent highscore list

Also i realised some people judge loading times based on scene reset - I have fade out effect to reset the scene which is why it is slow and gradual. without it, its basically instant

Darren's is free, not part of a pack and works great on devices.

@sugawara It's not like that, it's experienced users pointing out that something not device tested shouldn't be for sale. Also that we are seeing everybody selling untested/half hearted/failed game templates.

People giving free templates and tutorials has dropped substantially since the start of everybody selling rubbish, people are getting lazy. Take time to learn (there is more than enough non template help out there) and code from scratch

+1. Things not tested on the device have no place being sold as a template. I bet you would be saying the oppostie and thanking us if you bought it and it didnt run on the device.

And by saying you use methods that are tested but other devs, but that you ahvent tested youself, shows your serious lack of experience

I've tried discussing more than usual with you two and everything has been said already... but it feels like trolling at this point and won't be participating. Everyone else has been quite supportive.

    Latest changes:

This will be the final update at $12, with the next release will be a price change due to the variety in this template.

Just want to say 2 things.

1: The template looks great - for $12 its even worth it just for a play around - some people on here are really being a bit to harsh on him as he's said from the beginning that its cheap because it's not properly tested. I understand what you're all saying, but a bit of Cyber bullying appears to be happening here - and this is supposed to be a friendly forum, so come on guys, give him a bit of a break here.

2: Once the template has been tested, and if it works successfully, I reckon people wouldn't mind forking out a couple of extra $$ for it.

For a first start, looks like you're doing well mate - well done

Thanks cnmeyer1980 - cyber protection >:) I appreciate the support and kindness

Heres a preview of the latest update with hiscores + difficulty scaling + misc:

No probs mate - your games looking great!

I'm a little short on cash this month (and I know your template is very cheap) - but I will definitely buy the template next month.

    Keep up the good work.
  • mangaroomangaroo Member Posts: 419
Awesome! Thanks for your interest and i will, :).
i know a few people check here regularly so just showing you guys whats happening atm :) The difficulty scales more flexibly now and more obviously, + various little changes here we go:

fixed a bug or two since that video and made the bottom platforms more useful - the red flash indicates difficulty change

Ultimately you are right, if it hasnt been tested, it shouldn't be sold. But he did say it after the fact. I think my comment was more aimed at johnpapiomitis who's wording makes him sound like a complete stuck up ass, which is helpful I suppose for game salad because if you discouraged everyone who came and made a mistake, you could keep it to a nice small group who's only care is their own bottom line.

hehehe so now you agree with me huh? My wording did not make me seem like a ass, i was just stating the fact you should not be selling anything that has not been tested, which is common sense, and which you also just agreed with me. He refuses to think theres a problem with doing that. Also this is the internet, so if you get offended by a couple words you need some friends.

sure i could have worded this a bit nicer, but the fact is every day people come here with NO experience having no clue what theere doing trying to sell stuff. Were not talkjing about him making a game and me shooting it down, that would be really rude fo me. But he is trying to SELL A TEMPLATE, with no experience, no dev account, no testing, ect. Its not shooting someone down if they refuse to see there peoblems and attempt to fix them. Dont try to sell something if you have no clue if it works! and like i said in a earlier post if your just thinking something will work because another dev used it and you havent tried yourself, thats the stupid and most unexperienced thing i ever heard. Its so funny how people want to sell something and make a quick buck, but when somone starts to state facts they get offeneded hahahha. but welcome to gamesalad non the less!
  • mangaroomangaroo Member Posts: 419
Again with this. I told you i will test as soon as i can buy the dev account. in the mean time we have people asking questions all the time on how to do this and how to do that. Look at my last video - theres a ton of things going on now. Something for anyone wanting to learn and its getting better daily.

Now i've had a look at other templates and a lot are often plain in comparison, yet much more expensive due to testing. I understand this. How do you still not get that. You record a video of your template and showing it running on the iphone. Not everyone does that - its not stated anywhere as necessary. I have disclosed this information to customers and AGAIN its reflected in the price. Actually you came off exactly as was posted earlier - remarkably small minded. And i've had a few people email me to show their interest and understanding with this thread.

You can probably tell with the way this game is heading that I am going ahead with it! yet im still selling the template, something out of necessity.

hehe youve been here for a week, you got a lot to learn. good luck!

Absolutely and im looking forward to learning the rest. Thank you...honestly cant wait to get dev account..and have it on my device
