Once you get to understand it Gimp is pretty good for things like that, but if you are talking about GIFs then theres a free app on the mac app store for that

Flash if you have the money, and for less I like DoInk on the ipad is good and Pencil off sourceforge.

Photoshop isn't that bad, just don't use the animation option but use layers and layer-groups.

The animations option isn't working for me either because when you change a layer or ad one the animations get mixed up, it ads it to all frames and you have to turn them of one by one.

Flash does pretty well for animation. Cant beat symbols and tweening animations to create some nice transitions then pump out the animation as a png sequence!

You can download a 30 day trial of the latest Flash or pickup an old copy CS2 or CS3 from ebay for 100>400 dollars.

To animate something done in Photoshop or Illustrator, I use Toon Boom Studio.

    Hey MMK,
Flash is a good way of producing animations but, when ever something moves on the screen the workload is HUGE!
Depending how much time you have to complete your project, I would recommend CrazyTalk6 Animator.
I just bought the program and it is simple to learn as well as inexpensive.

Check it out on youtube and see if that fits your needs?

    ciao for now,

Flash is more unstable than game salad, animate, close down, open again, then half your friggin images are missing you have to delete them and then click backspace to get them back then they show up,after effects is great but no bone tool,so you have to separate all the moving parts, and you can use expression controls to move your images instead of dragging around, whereas flash has the bone tool but is buggy as hell, and that leaves you right back at the start ha ha sorry
    ok id use after effects

I use none of them as i use a 3d program to do all animation and special effects.
My opinion was not needed but still i liked to post.

if you want flash to work then its best if you create your artwork within flash then youu can draw your bones straight onto your arms and legs for anyone who doesn't understand or hasnt tried to animate a walk cycle ,to do this normally you would have to separate all the limbs that move then move the rotation point of each to the point where you think it would rotate ie the elbow.but with the bone tool you could have a straight and complete arm with no disconnections, you then add your bones and flash manipulates the image to the movement of your bones giving a more realistic feel to the movement saves a load of time, but flash tools are not as good as illustrator tools plus the program has issues, more when importing images, less when creating in flash
    Cheers

for anyone who wants to get into there own graphics its completely unnecessary to learn animation in a 3d program because the time difference is about 6 months if your new to graphics and animation then just stick with 2d animation, with a few simple tricks you could make it look 3 dimensional anyway shading lighting ect...

With flash, can you make a run cycle with one image?

Yes i totally agree with you.it is practically useless to learn a 3d program for somenone who is new to graphics to make 2d animations.I am doing 3d for atleast 4 years so it looks easier to me.

for a run cylce i have about 7 separate images that you have to pose.

Jein (German for "yes and no")!

It latest version (the one you get when you download the app which costs about $50 Canadian) is 6.2.x and will install into Parallels.
This is how I run it at first but I've decided to dust off my old HP X2 5000 I got a few years ago and use that instead.
It runs better than on my iMac because of the nVidia card? (just a rough guess).

What's great about using Flash is that it is vector. You can create your graphics initially for the iphone, and when you are ready, just resize for the ipad and Mac. Vector keeps the images nice and clean, not pixelated.

I use a combination of Anime Studio (which for the most part is vector), Photoshop and After Effects. At least for all my 2D character stuff anyway.

    too!

Actually more like half / half.

My mother is from Wien (Vienna) and my dad was from Hamburg.
I am therefore a perfect mix of a wiener and a hamburger :)

    All of the above?

I actually went to school for animation, so I pretty much use everything I need to pull off whatever effect I'm trying to get done.

I don't make that many animations, but when I do, I use Toon Boom Studio. While the program itself is pretty expensive, I would say it is very user friendly. You just have to know what your doing.
