Hey Jill. Sounds cool you are looking to hire your users. Although I think you guys should consider work from home options. You would have access to a lot more skilled GameSalad users. I'd throw in my resume but theres not a chance I could move.

We definitely understand that most of our users don't live in Austin.

That said, after careful consideration, we determined that the person in this role would need to have daily, face-to-face interaction with our dev team.

Wow, what a great team to work with... (Even looking at few of Global Game Jam posts only would suffice to make that statement) :)

I somehow got carried away for a second there, even tough the chances were slim. But that last line killed me! :D

If you guys ever (I mean EVER) have a job opening in Europe, let me know...

(Or any home job would be awesome too :D)

Anyway, hope you find what you're looking for. Good luck making this tool even more awesome!

Well my motivation is I need a steady paycheck pretty bad and I have to much here to move like Family and a Mortgage. Fat Chance of selling a house in my area. I have had houses sitting on my street so cheap for so long I have a hard time not buying them. But god knows when i'd ever be able to sell them. And there actually nice houses.

I'm really interested in submitting a resume for this position, and since I'm single, 27, a college graduate, currently self employed, and already living in Texas, moving won't be a problem for me. My only question is this:

If I was selected for the position, would I still be able to publish my own games through GameSalad?

I'm currently a Pro Member and would like to continue pursuing personal game creation as a creative and financial outlet. This isn't necessarily a make or break issue for me, but I haven't been able to find this information on the Careers page or the ToS.

    Thanks!

    That's a good question.

Another good question is stock options... what if GameSalad goes big like Facebook? :)

As for being in Texas, this job seems perfect for telecommuting. Look at Tshirtbooth. Isn't he in Canada... and yet he's one of the most helpful people around.

Salary range is also useful information. I've had tech support jobs before. Heh, lousy pay... and that was in New York/New Jersey.

    http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Technical_Support_Specialist/Salary

Heh, but if it's like $50,000-$60,000... that might be interesting... because houses are cheap in Texas... and nice looking too!

I imagine there are lots of people in the Austin area that would be perfect for this job. It's a good entry level opportunity.

Thats what i'm saying. Skype has made face to face cross country. You'd save on office space, Utilities, Etc…

Mail me a mac and tell me what you want me to do. :) Big Savings in the long run IMO. Not to mention On Call is a piece of cake since my Office is in my house. Makes it a far less stressful situation for peoples families.

I've actually known some people who rarely went to an office and there job was basically QA for new Verizon software.

WoW !! This sounds amazing. What a bummer though about the Austin thing. What about a "summer" internship? hah

Probably not. In my experience companies usually prefer to use local peoples, even if less experienced, to avoid the hassle of immigration documents.

Awesome, best of luck to whomever nabs the position. I would apply but I have no interest in doing customer service. Austin is supposed to be a very nice place to live.

Any user we would hire would be able to continue publishing your games.

We'd work out the legalities during the hiring process.

I don't mind customer service. It's actually a great job. It's not political. Things are either broken or they're fixed. And when you fix problems, you're like a superhero. But unfortunately, the pay normally associated with customer service jobs is not good.

Another nice thing about Customer Service is that it's black and white... again fixed or broken. It's not like graphic design, where a cover might be too blue or too pink... or not ethnically diverse... or whatever little tedious things. It goes for advertisements too. How many festive Christmas borders do they expect one person to make?

That's why I think this is a great entry-level job. Get in, learn a lot, climb the ranks... GET STOCK OPTIONS!

Now I'm even more excited by the prospect! It makes sense to allow the hired user to continue making their own games. It's akin to having a full time beta tester on hand.

We should all be excited that this position will be filled by a user because it gives a solid voice to the foundation that GameSalad is providing to. There is potential here for great things. The way I see it, this position isn't only about customer support in the standard context. Escalating new feature requests alone tells me that they're looking for a perspective that isn't solely coming from inside the development bubble. It's smart. It's exciting. It's a good thing for everyone involved with GameSalad.

Awesome. You seem like an ideal candidate. You're excited about GameSalad, you're already in Texas and you're eager about this job. It seems that you might need to expand your game library though. Your profile doesn't show any apps.

Thanks! Yeah, I don't have any games showing on my profile, but I sent links to my work in the resume. You can check out PixYPHUS or PixYPHUS HD on the App Store. Those are the first games I released only using GameSalad as the development tool. It's a conceptual piece, and I think it's beautiful.

Here's a couple of my favorite screenshots from the HD version:

Tshirtbooth: haha move your family to Austin! :D
  • ChunkypixelsChunkypixels Member Posts: 1,114
Dunno why they wouldnt just hire Tshirtbooth in Canada... hes certainly got all the required assets... has proved himself with both GameSalad and with his support and help for the software. Hes already had various working relationships with the company...

They could open an office in Canada, and apply for all the Tax breaks and R&D credits that the rest of the games industry is moving to Canada for....

So instead of costing them money, it would actually save money!...

BTW Tshirt... have you thought about applying for any of the Tax breaks or incentives yourself? I know it can be a lot of paperwork, but it could be worth it. I worked for 3 years in Canada, at a number of games studios and all the companies I knew of were getting some sort of government aid/tax breaks/incentives... applying for Telefilm arts grants seemed very popular.

You make it sound like opening an remote office 1000 miles away is an easy thing. You have to remember that opening another office would be added cost for only one employee. Besides they already stated they want someone they can meet with face to face on a daily basis. I work for a global company and having to deal with people remotely does suck, so I can understand this requirement from GS.
  • PhoticsPhotics Member Posts: 4,172
Canada?! BAH... if it's just one person... you can rent space in a NYC office for about $300 a month. A Manhattan address, phone number and access to conference room can be really good for business.

Tshirtbooth should join the team in Austin, Texas.

We could sing the national anthem together.

"The rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air!"

I don't understand how it works this way either, as telecommuting is actually more economical for a company. Stuff like customer service is easily outsourced. Video Chat adds that face-to-face. GameSalad has like three offices already anyway.
