Panic Springs - Atari 2600 Style by Gamesmold

Hi there,

my first Game Center title has now been approved: Panic Springs!

http://itunes.apple.com/app/PanicSprings/id443800624?mt=8

It is an ultra-retro game with the looks of an Atari 2600 game. Sprites are 8 pixels wide, only one color per scanline, rainbow-gradients, oscillator sounds - even the tiny black bars on the left screen side are there (they appeared when the Atari still needed processing time before drawing the line, as it had no frame buffer).

Actually, I had created this game just to relax from the three large games that I'm working on at the moment, and then I found it really addictive.

The landscapes are generated procedurally and not randomly, so one can memorize tricky passages as well as high speed areas.

Scanlines can be turned on/off.

Hope you like it!
Cheers,
Thomas

I'm trying to download to my phone, but it's not showing up on the device yet :(

Still - I *will* be downloading this!

Wanted to do a game in this style myself, but it's been pushed back a bit (too many others to do first!)

Best of luck with it! Looks lovely! :D

Bought this and it is excellent. Really nice retro look and feel but with smooth controls.

    Hi there,

thank you all for the positive feedback! :o)

Of course, I had the wrong title string in the URL.
The above link was working though, but just to make sure there's no confusion, the correct one is:

    http://itunes.apple.com/app/PanicSprings/id443800624?mt=8

And thanks especially to Quantumsheep. Air Supply was a great inspiration for me to create a game like this!

    Best,
    Thomas

I like the idea of scanlines. i was actually thinking of doing that in a project as well. I'm doing an arcade title, and wanted to give the look of an old crt, so scanlines and faint images of the HUD and menu burnt into the screen from it's time idling.

But man, after you designed the image for the box, didn't you just want to make the game FOR the Atari 2600?! Putting the game on an atari cart, with the box and instructions tangible... I think that would be all I thought about when making a retro game based on a specific console. Just a constant "Oh man.... how cool would that be"

So I got the chance to play this after downloading yesterday!

****ing hell. This is awesome :D

There are a few games on iOS I've thought "I wish I'd made that" and this is one of them!

Also: Top of the leaderboards, baby! ;)

Nicely done, Gamesmold - you've raised the ante for me! :D

    Cheers,

    QS :D

Edit: fixed your original link :)

    Thank you all!
And thanks @ QS for the quick edit!
@ Mrshoestore, yes, of course, an own *real* Atari 2600 game would indeed be awesome. Funny enough, I have already created some simple 2600 games using batari Basic (that actually produces real working machine code). I know some people still produce these modules and sell them. But I believe the target group would be quite small...

I'm going to finish up a few projects and then follow your lead. This game is so awesome, man! I must make a 2600 styled game now. Won't rest until I do! This game blows me away how fun it is!

Indeed, not only did they create the thread all on their own, but it also grows and grows:

Usually, I'd have to bump it on and on, but this topic seems to be of interest somehow... :o)

And: Just found it in New and Noteworthy Action and Arcade in the US Store.
So here's hoping it'll also climb to the front pages, eventually...

I mighta sold you a few copies on twitter last night. This is right up the alley of 85% of my friends.

(which kinda sucks, cause the game I'm making isn't. But I like it, so harumph.) ;)

They work at Apple? But probably not as app store testers, or do they? Cause that would sure be very interesting. Knowing how they make their decisions on N&N and stuff...

    Wooo Hooo Awesome news!

I will pick it up later...

Will you be updating us on sales figures?

Congrats, you certainly have the golden touch with apple but quality shines through so your features are well deserved!
