iOS Viewer does not respect Orientations set by user

Am I very sadly mistaken,

Or has this old viewer bug from 0.9.94 carried right on through to 0.10.0?

I've just upgraded to 0.10.0, and the iOS viewer STILL does not respect the user's orientation settings they put into the Scene Attributes.

WHAT?

Will this be fixed? It's been a known bug since the release of 0.9.94, and it's still there?

Crimmeny.

Please put in a fix now so that it's ready for the next release.

Very disappointing to see obvious (and very annoying) bugs like this passing straight through from one build to the next. Disappointed.

I'm never gonna get game of the month. I'm always coming to these forums, angry about something. :)

Apologies for that, but what am I to do? I've put my livelihood on the line, to make games with Game Salad, and when I feel hamstrung by some of the bugs and things, it seems only fair to come here and report my issues and concerns.

It's expected behavior with the viewer. Use adhoc testing to test functionality, it's so much more accruate in performance.

    Thanks for the response Jon.

BUT, it's not the expected behaviour of the viewer. It didn't used to do that (in 0.9.93 and previously), and obviously it's in everyone's favor if it behaves appropriately.

Ad Hoc testing is all well and good, but it doesn't replace the immediate turnaround of quick iteration testing in the viewer.

If you're making a game with accelerometer controls, and you want to test quickly in the viewer, while iterating a new feature, you really want the viewer to just behave as it should. It's a simple bug and should be fixed.

@hymloe i had this problem also what i did was when i run and build the GS viewer to my device make sure that the orientation is only set to landscapes and uncheck the portrait modes this fixed mine.
  • HymloeHymloe Member Posts: 1,653
Well, that's how it USED to work in 0.9.93, but now it just ignores which boxes you tick, and rotates in all directions. At least, that's what happens to me in 0.9.94 and 0.10.0.

It's very annoying, and should be fixed. I constantly have to use the device's Rotation Lock feature when testing, and when showing people my apps (some of the landscape, some of them portrait), it's especially annoying, because I have to go in and out of the Rotation Lock mode all the time, because the game keep flipping the wrong way.

    Very unprofessional.

It's annoying for sure. I see you have a fix that you do to get around this.

You can also just make sure you are holding the device in the position the game you are starting needs to be in, before launching the viewer. Works fine, but doesn't rotate if you flip the device. And like @jonmulcahy said, AdHoc is the best way to tell, and it also doesn't have the rotation problem.

Problem is, if you have a game that uses accelerometer, it can flip while you're controlling it. And sometimes the camera doesn't fix itself back up when you rotate back to the right orientation.

So it's all just a hassle that shouldn't be there.

Yes, I can work around it in various ways.

But it's not ideal, and why should I have to?

Thanks for the comments, guys. Just needs fixing. That's all I'm saying, really. These bugs shouldn't hang around for two whole versions of Game Salad.

I want to test my current game project (Landscape) on my iPod Touch 3rd Gen, but the accelerometer in it is broken. This means I can't test the game on it, because of the bug with the iOS Viewer! Very annoying.

If this bug wasn't in the iOS Viewer, the game would turn up the right way, but as it is the game shows up in portrait mode, and it's all off the edge of the screen.

Game Salad, please please remember to fix this immediately, so it's all working properly for the next release.

Hymloe, please listen to us, we are trying to help you. Publish the app as an adhoc build and test it on your device, it will stay in the correct position.

Thank you @boygeniusstudios, I do appreciate the reminder! :)

I know that Ad Hoc builds work. But they also take time to make, which is no good for when you're sitting and working on a new project, and want to test on device once a minute, for example. Making an Ad Hoc build takes at least 5 minutes, perhaps 15, depending on size of project, etc. And a whole lot of mucking around.

The iOS Viewer is there for quick testing, and should take about 20 seconds for a small project. Which is great. And the orientation USED to work properly on it, but no longer does. And that is NOT how it's supposed to work.

All I'm saying is, I want Game Salad to fix the iOS viewer so that it works properly in the next update.

It used to work with the correct orientation in 0.9.92. It has not worked in 0.9.94 or 0.10.0.

    That is all!

Unfortunatly they consider the current implementation working as designed.

So you'll have to use adhoc builds for testing that requires anything with orientation

Is this fixed now, in the new version of the viewer 0.10.1?

    I damned well hope so.

Anyone tried it? I'm still on 0.10.0.

It works for me using new gs version. when you publish on gs make sure both orientations are checked.
  • HymloeHymloe Member Posts: 1,653
So, when using the iOS viewer, it respects the orientations you've ticked for each scene?

It's been really annoying that the viewer hasn't been working properly in the last few versions. All good now?
