Been with GS less than 2 yrs? This thread "could" help alot.

I have been with GS for less than 2 yrs. I saw the potential in this software right off the bat, and purchased my first pro account with in the first month or so. ( But I didn't have to have Pro to learn the GS software and its full potential). I have release a few apps. They have been good to me. I have some GS friends on skype and I ask them for help from time to time especially when I'm bothered by an issue and am in a hurry to fix it. If none of my friends are logged on skype. Then the next thing I do is come to the forums and throw my problem out there for someone to see and hope they send a reply with proper guidance. While I am waiting for a response to my thread. I journey through the GS search engine that I have deemed " THE BAD LANDS". Hoping to roll the roulette wheel and choose the right keyword that will help me find what I need so that I can go on with my app work. Then I come back to the forums to see if someone has been gracious enough to stop what they are doing and help me out. This has been my system since day one. And let me tell you.............................................This is not the way to do it.

GS has provided us with a awesome tool that I just recently learned of...( and ive been here on and off 2 yrs). And after going through it. I'm better off for doing so. And I will go back again and again.

First step before attempting your first app..................... COMPLETE THE COOKBOOK

This is for us who have not realized the HUGE benefit from....... THE COOKBOOK
http://cookbook.gamesalad.com/ To some of you..it will be your new best friend.

We as children, learn to ride a bike with the assistance of training wheels or our parents hand on the back of our seat. The
Cookbook is that training wheel. And I love the way it is set up. If you use the cookbook the way it has been created. Once you are finished you will be so far ahead of the game than those who do not. You will already have so much information behind. It will also have you better prepared to understand what you are seeing when you watch videos or play with templates.

There are a few other things that have been put together that will help you out a lot. "VIDEOS" GS has created the YOUTUBE COOKBOOK. http://www.youtube.com/user/GameSaladCookbook

Do not mistake the YOUTUBE COOKBOOK for the COOKBOOK tutorial.

You will find a lot of helpful videos that will answer a lot of your future issues. ( And basically do the work for you ).
Now FryBaconStudios has taken it upon himself to create a page that helps you locate the right video you need at any given time. If you cant find what you are looking for at the youtube cookbook page. Go to his link and it will help guide you to the video that best fits your current need.

http://gleesongroupmedia.com/gsguide/gsguide.html

You will Love this link. I know I have.

There is also a school teacher in California who teaches GS to a group of his students. And I have to say I like the videos that he uses to assist his students to understand GS. You may find some useful items here.

And like Ive said. You also have the assistance from the forums and the GS search engine.

My methods of finding help have changed in the last week or so. I noticed my steps where out of order. So this is what Im going to do from now on when I need help. I think I will accomplish alot more with this method.

Before you even start your first project.

1: Complete THE COOKBOOK tutorial here on the site. If you're not patient enough to do this first step. GS is not for you.

2: Surf the video links that I have given you. Watch them!! They will inspire you. I promise you. You will have 5 ideas for a cool game before you have finished your first hour of video viewing.

3: Introduce yourself to the forum make some friends... you will need them. Also just reading forum threads and reading some of the issues others have had. Will just be that much more info you already have before you even start your first app. And when you are working on your apps and hit a problem. You may say to yourself. "I remember a thread about this."

Now when the time comes and you are ready to ask for help on the forum. Here is a post thread you need to read. It will help them help you.

http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/53076/advice-on-getting-help.

I hope this lil bit of info is helpful. I also know there are other people out there who have taken it one step further to help others, And I hope they will offer links they use that help them when they hit a road block.

I dont know all the Forum: RULES OF THE ROAD. So please do not add any links that are against the forum policies.

Thank You.

P.S. GO TAKE THE COOKBOOK TUTORIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The soul purpose was to make sure people take the COOKBOOK tutorial. SO many questions are answered before they become questions. And I thought I throw in a few other helpful things that I knew about.

I hear ya on folks needing to review the cookbook. I feel that it's review-to-completion should be a requirement before folks get forum posting privileges. There have been so many similar posts about basic topics that could have been answered reviewing the GameSalad features page, or the cookbook (not to mention countless prvious postings). It would also kinda weed out those whom are more serious about taking this type of task on and keep the random "I wanna join your community, buy my stuff!" posts from dropping in all the time. But that's evil 'ol little me.

I joined a few months ago and would be lost without this forum and the cookbook and of course all the supplementary tutorials and other offerings made by the members here - I appreciate the thought of this thread. I would like to mention also that I find the indie developing community so supportive (compared to my own personal experiences in other art fields, but again, those are just my own experiences and maybe I shouldn't generalize). But I always appreciate any bit of advice, and I appreciate those who take the time to extend a friendly hand to anyone who wants to learn how to make great games in earnest. I know I need all the help I can get :D

Excellent advice. This should be a sticky.

The cookbook was a challenge for me. I just wanted to jump in and presto-magico I had an awesome app. But, I did it (now if I would just refer to it more.)
