For the purposes of this thread, I think it is best that everyone forget that Wordpress.com exists. If you want a simple blog, without much customization or control... wordpress.com is fine. But, your website will be @wordpress.com which is undesirable to most. like yourblog.wordpress.com (having another company name in your URL doesn't appear professional) Last I checked, you are also unable to change the structure of wordpress, so this disables the use of a lot of plug ins and third party templates, and that means your website will look like every other wordpress site. (Which also looks unprofessional)
Regardless of which software you decide to use, you should acquire Hosting from a reputable provider as well as a Domain name. A host is generally a server, that has specific technologies installed to handle that servers specific duties. LAMP means Linux(Operating System), Apache(Web Server), MySQL(Database), PHP(& /or Perl/Python)(Language) and this is what you want for wordpress (and most other common web stuff). Once you have a Server to host your site, your Host provider should have a way for you install wordpress, joomla, drupal or whatever you want really, with a one-click install or something really simple.
I wrote this because it seems there is a huge misunderstanding that wordpress site = wordpress.com site... it doesn't. (Its not just here that folks seem to be misunderstanding, it seems this is a common misunderstanding everywhere)
I believe WordPress is the best software to create a gaming website without having knowledge of html or other coding languages. I have created one website on WordPress by simply following the steps shown on Buildsitenow.com. It is an extensively used platform to create website or blog in a customized way. Plenty of free themes and Plugins are out there which can be used to design a website in your own way.
For my wordpress site I run wordpress on a site hosted by fatcow.com, never had any problems. Wordpress has worked great fornthe 2+ years I've been using it.
I used to use Fatcow. Then after being with them for about 4 years, they suddenly jacked up the price while sending me a renewal email with the old price on it. I contacted them to find out why I'd been billed more than I'd been invoiced (and why the price was raised without notifying me in advance) and they were so horrendously unhelpful and rude that I went somewhere else.
I am a Web Designer for over 15 years and I swear by Joomla. There are other great CMS software packages out there (such as Wordpress), but the stuff I have been able to do with Joomla is amazing. As others have stated though, Joomla is more difficult for a beginner. Just my 2 cents!

I have used both joomla and wordpress
Joomla seemed to have better options especially for making non-blog oriented sites. Though always seemed less stable, I'm rerunning wordpress now but it took a lot of digging to find a theme that worked for a non blog site.
