Forum Rules

I recently had comments deleted and also the user who commented after me. I'm not quite sure what was so bad about the post. It seems to me that others get away with totally trashing threads on a continuing basis and yet nothing is done about it. It seems conversation other than gum drops and blue sky's are outlawed because of the influx of 12 - 14 year olds on the forum. We've been here before as to age appropriateness for the forums. This forum used to be a cool place with tons of knowledgable serious developers now it's like candy land. I am at a loss. It's just too bad I guess GS considers them their target audience. Or maybe it's an indication I need to move on to a more sophisticated development tool. Oh well.

Don't know who that was, but I assure you it wasn't me. I share your sentiment, pretty much about everything you post when it comes to the forums, and general work ethic. A lot of grab-assery has been going on lately, and I know exactly where you are coming from, and how you feel. I've personally been trying to cull that activity, lately.

Nothing against the younger members of this community, at all. I love everyone. I try my best to be fair, and impartial when moderating, but sometimes things get out of hand. Lots of people in this little family of ours, so these things I expect from time to time. I never delete, or close threads that are relevant, and stay on topic. Everyone has a voice, and I try to respect it, until it gets out of hand.

A lot of this is our (the moderators) fault for letting things get out of hand, and not putting an end to off topics...and again, general grab-assery. I'm not pointing any fingers, and I don't have any particular members in mind when I say that, it's across the board. I love this community, and it is the most helpful in all of the developer communities I know of, and I hope we can keep it that way.

    @FryingBaconStudios @SlickZero

Dave, hi, don't worry, disappearing posts recently are nothing personal, the problem has been affecting quite a few other people including myself as well, and last to say, hopefully the problem has been, or will be solved soon.

What has been happening: when people have been pressing "Yes" of "Did this post help you? Yes or No", for some rather peculiar reason, the post has been deleted.

Definitely a Vanilla Forums glitch which has been pointed out to @SaladStraightShooter who says - in different words - it's going to be dealt with asap.

Yes @slickzero you and I have been around here for a long while and it used to be very developer centric around here, not much anymore. @codewizard and the team are doing great work and charting a course to maturate the tool and I can't imagine any serious developers coming into the forums in it's current state and thinking how immature it all is and this reflects poorly on Gamesalad's image as a serious development tool. I think GS needs to decide what image they want. Do they want their image to be that of a toy or a game development tool.

Could be a forum bug. When I for example click the yes button to accept a correct answer, quite often the post is deleted. Real annoying.

Yes, that what I wrote two posts up from yours ;-)

Thanks for the info on that but I still think this is an issue we need to discuss as a community.

I agree with @FryingBaconStudios. I think Gamesalad needs to seen more as a Game Development Tool and not toy. You see, when I tell people that im an Indie Developer, they always ask do I use Xcode, or Cococs2d. When I tell them I am using Gamesalad it seems to change their opinion of me as a developer. I don't know if anyone sees that too. I would like Gamesalad to be known as a powerful Game engine, and when you tell people you use Gamesalad to make your apps they will see it the same way as if i told them i use Xcode.

That's the problem when you are the only non-code development platform around. The low entry point attracts everyone, whether they are serious developers or not.

The community is great though- there are always people willing to help others figure out how to do something. I've learned a lot from reading various threads here, and it doesn't just help with GameSalad, but the ideas can be adapted to my programming knowledge as a whole. And because of everyone's generosity, I am trying to give back to the community as well.

Perhaps we need a new wave of moderators, to help quell the off topic discussion.

@Gyroscope & @Doguz ...That's good to know. I personally don't like the "Did this post help you" option. It just looks bad when someone types out this long post trying to help someone, and it's flagged with "rejected answer" But that's just me.

Other than that, I'll take some of the blame for the misdirection the forums come across from time to time. @SaladStraightShooter is our Community Manager/Liaison and he leaves a lot of the moderating in our hands, as he is a busy, busy man, and doesn't have the time to moderate the forums 24/7 himself, and babysit the moderators, too. And I don't have the time to moderate 24/7 myself, either. I'm usually the late nighter/early morning crew, when it comes to moderating.

Yes it's a shame because the serious developers move on to other advanced tools and we as a community lose that professional experience and knowledge. I know codewizard is trying to build this tool into a powerful one and I think as a community we need to develop too.

I'm not going to lie I joke around sometimes and I hope I'm not one of the ones who is out of line. But as I'm learning gamesalad, I try to help other people out with even less knowledge then me. But other than that since I've been using gamesalad I love it and I love most of the regulars in the forums.

One thing I'm wondering about. Not even sure if its possible, or I might not have read them myself. But maybe have it to where, the forum rules have to be agreed with at the time people start a new account, because I've been seeing a lot of duplicate questions being asked. I'm not really even sure how gamesalad can regulate it. But hopefully someone can come up with a idea.

Yeah, me too. I think part of this problem is the recent coup business @Utveckla_Games does in every "miscellaneous" category thread (not blaming him, just stating). He's agreed to keep thing to wall-posting, so no worries there.

Also agree on how the forum demographics make GS look like a pre-teens developer tool, not a more complex one. Dunno bout @Utveckla_Games, but I'm definitely older than 12; some of this joking, however, suggests otherwise about the forums :(

Oh, and I've had comments deleted here too. One was even 100% serious and productive, and earned 2 Agrees, but was still deleted :/ , looks like some moderator fouled up there :p

@chakku I had a poll deleted, that I was trying to be productive on. But I guess someone didn't think so.

I had a post 'disappear' due to the forum being restarted. The number of posts on the thread was greater than the number of posts in the thread I noticed.

@Chakku Definately past 13. 15 now and a half now. Also, yes everyone I am sorry for the comments with @Chakku. The main reason I post in miscellaneous is because I'm asking opinions or just getting to know you guys. I'll try to find a better category. Will you all forgive me for being childish on the forums? Edit: Reread Chakku's comment and understood something a bit more. I didn't realize that everything with Chakku was going on in miscellaneous. I really am sorry. If you all want I'll stop completely with the "Chakku's kingdom" thing. It is childish and dumb. I am terribly sorry for any spam I have caused the forums. I am trying to use GameSalad for it's purpose though: making games, I'll act that way on the forums too.

I personally don't see what's wrong with dropping a joke here and there. I can, however, see a problem when that's the only thing that goes on. There's a time and place for everything. A large number of people here, including some who have posted in this thread, have helped a lot during the years. I'm sure the people they have helped are extremely thankful.

Oh, don't take it too hard on yourself :). It's my fault, too. All I meant was that I did see how the creator of the thread might not like it, so we should minimize thread space.

Fact: GameSalad is (one of the easiest if not) the easiest SDK out there.
Therefore: It attracts people with less skill and experience.
Therefore: Those people post on the forums when they have an "issue" or question that they are unwilling or unable to remedy themselves.
Therefore: The forums look untidy and unprofessional, because of the amount of newbies and people just plain not dedicated to working things out themselves.

Notice how I say "people with less skill and experience" and not "teens". This is because it is unfair to lump intelligent and hardworking teens in with the others, no matter how much of a minority they are. Plus, there are plenty of people who are not teens and have the same trouble, especially ones who don't know a lot of english.

It's not something that GS can fix. It's just the way it's going to be. However, they can make a quality tool to promote professionalism, and encourage intelligent moderation to make these effects seem (and be) less likely.

Also keep in mind that all forums have this issue to some extent. It's just the ease of use of GS that brings the unprofessionals and people who expect other people to do their work for them.

    Just my 2 cents :)

P.S. I think a series of simple forums rules that people have to agree to when they first join is a fantastic idea, because so many people just don't realize they're doing anything incorrectly. Do you think there is a possibility of this @SaladStraightShooter?
P.P.S. @Chakku - It's all fun and games until you get your head chopped off by the king :P But in all seriousness, we can quiet down a bit.

    I agree, wholeheartedly @Braydon_SFX.

And I was referring to no one in particular, and have no individual(s) in mind when I was talking about forum antics. They've been going on since before I've been here. No one needs to worry, unless you get a warning. I'm a smart mouth myself 99% of the time, and I love a good joke or 3. No reason we cannot kid around, or post a funny picture, or video in place of a response, but sometimes we all can take it too far, or drag it out longer than necessary, and completely bury or separate (by pages) relevant information that is within a thread.

Even though these forums do serve a specific purpose, like I said, there's nothing wrong with a little joking around from time to time. I don't want us to fear the forums, and nobody is out to get anybody. I promise. I would just like to see threads about problem solving, and general helpful information, stay about problem solving, and general helpful information, and not derail into something else so that there are pages of irrelevant information separating useful information. We have a "Miscellaneous" and "Non GameSalad News" thread for things that aren't specifically about GameSalad development.

@SlickZero - I'm aware of it, but I doubt there is a very low percentage of people who have actually read/found it. That is why there should be a much condensed list, at least half that in length, that people can read through and agree to at the beginning. Unless you make something in someones face and relatively short, it won't get read :)

When I sign up for forums, I always read the forum rules, and have been doing that since the internet began. I agree to the rules when I sign up, so I think it's a good idea to familiarize myself with that particular forums set of rules. That's just something I take upon myself since I am responsible for my actions. And they are always one of the sticky threads. And I'll know exactly what will bring negativity to me, according to how I behave on the forums.

I guess there's no real way to force someone to read rules. It's much like the Apple Agreement when you update iTunes, or any other software. And we all know what happened to Kyle when he didn't read the Apple Agreement before clicking the Agree button.
