•• 1 HOUR SALAD TOSSING CONTEST (24th April 2014) ••

edited April 2014 in Working with GS (Mac)

So here it is the first proper 1 hour salad tossing contest.

Rules:

  1. Create a game from scratch using GameSalad Creator
  2. The game idea should some how be based on the given daily 'theme'. (Magnets!)
  3. Only work on it for 1 hour (when you can find the time today)
  4. Make a short video of the game, post it on youtube and share in this thread.

The given Theme is their to give you some creative steer... anything goes..

There are NO prizes.. this is for fun !!

Hopefully this gives you (me) a great way to enjoy using GameSalad, to step away briefly from bigger projects, think up new ideas and try out new or old things in GameSalad without having to overly worry about all the aspects of game developing.

Good luck...

(I won't be making anything myself till this evening when I've got a spare hour).

Got a few ideas for this.. think mine might be more of a design 'experiment' than a game... hmm..

I've seen y'all doing these this week and I'm jealous that I don't have time to participate. I hoping one pops up on Saturday...

This one I'm definitely taking part in! Finally have some free time :D

How do you know they only worked on it for an hour? lol

    @willkesling‌
There's no prize... it's for fun.. so don't see much reason why someone would lie and work for longer...

The last two I did... earlier this week,(wednesday, tuesday) started at a set time, but since we're a global community not everyone has the same time free.

We could ask everyone to record their whole hour session and post it as a timelapse video (with the clock showing) . I did that in the last two, just cause I like the sped up videos showing the making... not to show I did it in an hour. Don't think it should be a requirement to take part though.

    @Armelline‌ great!!
@Braydon_SFX ... I won't be setting one up myself on Saturday.. Got a wedding to P.A.R.T.Y. at.

My hour is up and my game is done (well, as done as I could get it in an hour :P)

Trying to publish it to the arcade now but attached is the project file. I cut a LOT of corners to get something workable in an hour, and this is not representative of how tight I normally like my logic to be :P Given more time I'd tighten things up, add a real timer etc. I like that you can lose points even after your time is up, though, so I'd leave that in :D

I didn't quite have time to get it to work right when a game ends, so be careful with that :P I was madly rushing the timer in during the last 5 minutes so didn't get far :D

Also I suck far too much at graphics... all images are grabbed off Google.

Was fun trying to put something together in an hour, though!

Feel free to play around but this template is NOT free to use and must not be used as a basis of a game that is released. (Sorry, certain people like to take things that are not theirs and I want a solid basis for complaint if they do. Feel free to PM if you do want to use this abomination, I'll probably say yes.)

    Anyway:

    THEY WILL FALL OFF.

Edit: (As an aside, I originally had the nails following the magnet using magnitude, but ultimately it just felt better this far simpler way.)

I will spend some time this afternoon ironing out the kinks that I had to leave after an hour and will make it less buggy. Don't like something left half done :D

Sounds like you've achieved more than me.. mine is'nt even a finished game of any sort just interesting mechnics... just recorded little vid will post in a bit... (decided to do mine over lunch rather than this evening...)

Will have a video up soon! I'm sure I bought the MacHeist bundle with some kind of screen recording software... being useless finding it though :D

    Here's my 'Magnets' game mechanic.

In hindsight ... i should have called the metal actor the magnet and the magnets 'metal'.

He he @Armelline‌ just played your game.. very similar game mechanics... yours actually became a game though.. great stuff.

I lost a good 10 minutes doing the vector to angle and distance stuff and a bit more doing a touch offset so the metal actor didn't jump it's centre to exactly where I touched. All things I've not played with for a couple of years so good to re-visit it all.

I'll be posting something on this at some point today. It's 10:30 AM on the East Coast of the USA at the moment. :)

If you look at the rules (pretty sure I didn't delete them all) I actually started off with a plan very similar to yours, but I quickly realised I had no hope of doing it in an hour and so I went for the "stack 'em up and watch them fall because **** you" game approach. I found the magnitude/vectortoangle approach made the game too difficult though, so I just went with what felt cool to play.

I must have tried 10 different methods before ending up just going with the the first thing I'd tried :D

I think yours definitely has the makings of a much better game though! :D

Anyhow, here's a video for those who don't want to download and run the project:

Might actually make a little game out of it, I was surprised how fun it was to play.

I expect to be out all day Saturday too, but I'll definitely be up for one on Sunday!

I played yours and didn't realise you had'nt used vector to angle... plays pretty similarly.. numerous ways to skin a cat I guess... a errr magnet cat.

    very cool concepts!

  • ArmellineArmelline Member, PRO Posts: 5,415

Yeah I kinda just stuck some rules in and gave it a go and it just sort of worked... So I said to myself "okay, best make this better" and went through all kinda of mag/vector variations before realising it felt better at the start. Stripped it all out and just rolled with what I'd started with.

I was genuinely surprised that GameSalad just... made it work with so little actual input from me.

Just got mine as done as I could in 1 hour, boy that hour goes fast! I'll post a video as soon as I'm able.

  • StormyStudioStormyStudio United KingdomMember Posts: 3,989

@jamie_c look forward to seeing what you came up with....

    The video is posted:

Special thanks to the OpenStockProject for the car image, I didn't have time to draw my own.

  • StormyStudioStormyStudio United KingdomMember Posts: 3,989

@jamie_c that's very cool... I like the idea of magnetic mines in particular...

I did a 'bonus' 40 mins on my magnet game mechanic last night to try and make some sort of simple game out of it... I'll post a vid a little later.

It's called 'KILLER MAGNETS - Save the friggin princess!'.

Lol this is cool, so far I like all posted videos.

GS should host tournaments like this.
A bracket of 32 or 16 people and they face off to create games with only the given Sprites, objects, backgrounds, music etc in a folder that you can't download until the start day.

Then BAM! you have 24 or 48hrs to create a game using only what's in this folder

This could be something fun at GS :)

Nice work! Love this contest thingy.

  • StormyStudioStormyStudio United KingdomMember Posts: 3,989

@CodeMonster that's great. Definitely seeds of a playable game idea in there, my daughter would probably play that as it is for a good hour.

Below is a video of Killer Magnets.
I spent another hour tinkering with my magnet game mechanic to try out a few ideas and this was the result.

  • jamie_cjamie_c ImagineLabs.rocks Member, PRO Posts: 5,772

These are all cool, besides making my entry I love to see how each person interprets the theme. Very cool!

  • HopscotchHopscotch Member, PRO Posts: 2,782

@jamie_c, if you are wondering why there is nothing yet today, @StormyStudio did post a "Flappy" themed one but it got deleted by the Mods. :#
