UPDATE: The following posts are concerning changing my trading name to Neon Ghost apps but later you'll read why I change my mind...

Hi, as I've been publishing apps (the grand total of 3  -- so far) as a sole trader, I haven't registered as a limited company (yet) and so no official company name registered.

But I've recently discovered that as a sole trader - in the UK at least - I can use a "trading as" name.

To that end, I now have a trading name: instead of the unimaginative "David Griffin Apps" it'll now be "David John Griffin trading as Neon Ghost Apps".

For your interest, here's the new splash logo - an update of the prev. one - that'll be on all of my newer apps (and poss. on my 3 old ones eventually -it's already on my apps website):

I've now finished a batch of freelance design jobs I suddenly "acquired"; and finished (for the while) my creative writing... (one thing I've been up to over the last two and a bit months is write a 35,000 word novella for a competition); although the writing will be woven into a time planner shortly so I can devote time most days to it as well as app/game design as well.

Also for interest (or not! ) here's my writing website if you've not seen it: http://www.davidjohngriffin.com

and this is the game I was working on before time became a rare commodity for me (but when isn't it!):

http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/62151/sort-em-puzzle-app-progress-thread

I hope to get back to it very soon and get the thing out of the way and published. OK, onwards and upwards, everyone.

I'd like everyone to know that I am now trading as 'David Griffin Apps', the name recently became free and I grabbed it for cheap.

Spot on question, @zweg25 and yes, he's definitely got a point there, Jon... I was thinking about that very thing an hour ago....

I got my website address via Wix - and, unfortunately in this case, paid for 3 years... (for davidgriffinapps.com so you'll have to wait approx. 30 months before it's free again, @Socks  ha! )

So I'll email them and ask if there's a relatively painless (and cheaper!) way to either add on another domain name that simply points to davidgriffinapps.com or, if at all possible, change the domain name completely, a swap, basically, and hope they say it's not that expensive....

I'll post their answer here when I get it - it might help someone else in a similar situation in the future...

"So you checked that Neon Ghost Apps was available, yes?"

    ..."Um, sort of...."

    "Smack on the hand."

There are a couple of things/companies using "Neon Ghost" but not apps companies, but that still make me want to think again.... why did I think it wasn't thought up by anyone else? Search me!

Is nothing original in this world?!

As there's still no "Neon Ghost Apps" I might still keep it... though I really think I ought to think up something else that's not been used anywhere else at all...

Right, I'm off to sulk now. (Actually, I'm off to bed -goodnight!)

It is always go good idea not to name your company after yourself, because it makes it hard to sell to someone else.

OK, for reasons given in an earlier post in this thread, I've changed my "trading as" name.

Now it'll be trading as "Something" Ghost Apps: (I've suddenly thought that, as there's no proper way to protect a "trading as" name as a sole trader, other than a trademark, which is expensive, I'd better keep the name used "under my hat" for a while... there's a tiny amount of unscrupulous people around as we all know, and I don't want any of those taking the name.. (paranoia!!!) so the full trading name is anonymous here on the web as well as the first word in the screenshot shown below...

Shame, I'm quite pleased with it, and think you would have liked to hear what it is too... though if you buy any of my future apps you'll soon seen what it is then!

So here's my updated logo/splash for my apps for interest, with the first word scrambled (this version for the iPad) :

For those who don't know, the wireframe spiral graphic slowly rotates behind the main typestyle/logo...

    Anyhow, hope you like it...

    OK, I am so fickle...

I temporarily suppressed the black boxy shape and blue thingey to sort something ... but then it looked fine without them; better even...

Which made me think that with this logo I was trying too hard; was trying too much to make it distinctive and memorable, etc; – I suddenly saw it with fresh eyes and realised it was too complicated....

Now it's this (first word in each scrambled on the jpeg again):

    Less is more, they say....

Which interpolates to this (first word roughly scrambled as well):

Then fade to black - game or app starts.

That'll do me -won't change anymore; done and dusted. Now I get back to making the games....

Hope all of this has been interest for some of you; progression of thought, etc.

@gyroscope‌ you should incorporate. It will give you a lot of legal protection, and a few tax bonuses. And it only costs £15 if you do it online (I'm guessing you're UK based?). It will also stop people being able to register that company name. Though a company name is not the same as a trademark, it will afford you a little bit of protection.

That said, in the grand scheme of things, a trade mark is relatively affordable - approximately the same as a PRO licence.

Boring stuff aside, I really like the name and the look and feel. Very professional, but with just enough flare for creativity.

  • gyroscopegyroscope I am here.Member, Sous Chef, PRO Posts: 6,598

Thanks for that, @imjustmike  I will get around to doing that very thing relatively soon.

Glad you like the name style too, appreciate your comment.
