Hey All!

I just got married two weeks ago and just got back from my honeymoon a few days ago...
Just now getting back into the swing of things!

Here are some new screenshots of the game I am currently working on -
The Secret of Grisly Manor.

It's an old school adventure game, sort of like MYST, with a Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew vibe to it.

(I had to turn off/hide some of the things in these images so as not to give too much away,...)

I am hoping to have the game finished by the end of July.

    That looks fantastic! I'm gonna buy it! Hope you're gonna charghe more than 99c!!! Oh and congrats on the marriage! You'll probably never finish your games now as you'll be nagged about spending too much time in front of the computer :P

    Wowser, that's looking incredible. What a truly amazing talent you have; I'm blown away. I love adventure games: please make it for the iPad as well! (not that I've got an iPad yet...)

    Congratulations on your new marriage Joe. Did you marry someone in particular? Lol!

    Your next game looks ace! I can't wait to buy it. I too would love to see this on the iPad.

    I had this exact same idea back during the competition. Unfortunately, I realized that it was outside my graphics skills! Looks fantastic! Keep up the good work :)

    What are you going to do about the large byte size of all those images? Myst was about 600MB.

    Well, MYST had all that video...

    I will probably end up with about 50 screens like the ones above when the game is complete.
    Plus everything is animated, lightning crashes, etc...

    Those images above are less than 100K, so I am looking at about 5MB of background images.
    Plus another 5MB of other images, animations, as well as all the text popups (pretty much everything you tap on has more info in a text popup, as well as different text depending on what item you have selected). All those text popups are done in Photoshop.

    I am still hoping to have the game come in under 15MB, we'll see.

    That'd be a sweet achievement, considering CSI Miami, 1112 and the likes are in the hundreds of meg range... too much voice work, I guess... I LOVE adventure games... did I mention that already? lol.

    Your new Adventure game looks like the best ever! I really love the artwork style, Joe, You have mad skillz.

    Nice work!

    What settings did you use to save the images? Because to keep the quality you have to use png24 but then the size would be around 250/300k for each.

    Looks AMAZING!!! has a great spooky feel to it.

    Lots of work to do with the text, shame GS doesn't have the old import fonts system :(

    @everyone: thanks!

    @maralfer: there's no transparency in those so they are saved as PNG8, which greatly reduces their file size.

    @utopiangames: yeah, it's a little tedius, but that's ok. It also allows me to add little images into the text as well.

    PNG8 is only 256 color tho? It would be good to get some defacto answers from GS about about how bitmaps are handled..optimum file size, format, bit depth etc

    Yes, PNG8s are 256 colors. There is some dithering but it is hardly noticeable, especially with the iPhone's small pixels.

    Regardless of what you save the image as, it seems GS renders everything as 24-bit.

    How are you handling it? A scene for each image?

    And for moving around do you have on screen areas that when touched takes you there or make you turn around?

    About image quality: png8 are good but if there's a lot of gradients and shading even with dithering you will notice the difference, and with the new retina display it should be even more noticeable right? It would be good to have jpeg support in GS.

    The game is broken down into 7 Scenes. I was initially hoping to have the whole game in one Scene, but it's impossible with the RAM limitations.

    Each Scene has 10 or so areas. Touching different areas takes you to different parts of the game.
