iMac 27 w/5K display...WOW

CaptFinnCaptFinn Member Posts: 1,828

My wife has been doing very well with her photography. And he Mac mini can't be updated past 10.7.5 and has gotten so slow. I decided to buy her the iMac 27 w/5K retina Display. She loves it.

I work on my game salad stuff on a Macbook pro 15 retina. " I survive ". I set up my own user side to her new mac. Installed GS to see what it would be like working with this much real-estate.

OMFG WOW. My games scene is 800H x 3840W. and I can see 2/3 of the scene without having to scroll right. This is freaking awesome.

Sounds like you have it setup to run at 2560 x 1440 px ? This is the default setting, if you set the resolution at the native 5120 x 2880 px (hold option down when looking at the scaled resolution control panel) you should be able to see all of your scene ?

  • CaptFinnCaptFinn Member Posts: 1,828

no i have it set to full res. I tested it out. and got just a lil over 2/3

I think the assets panels on the left is taking up some of that 2880.

2880 and my scene is 3840. But it sure is nice.

Nice to be able to preview every possible project and see the entire screen even with the thumbnails pane at the bottom.

  • CaptFinnCaptFinn Member Posts: 1,828

i tried that option key suggestion.

Are you refering to system pref/displays

    resolution scaled?

More space is saying its 3200x1800

Are you refering to somewhere else?

There is no 2880 horizontal setting, the 2880 in my post refers to the vertical resolution of the native 5120 x 2880 px setting.

That's the reason I'd buy one if I had the money, it's basically one way of getting around GS's lack of zoom out !

Sounds to me like you have it set on 2560 x 1440 px, how did you set it to full resolution ? It comes defaulted at 2560 x 1440 px, so you would have had to manually change it to 5120 x 2880 px at some stage.

I bought one for myself last month. I love it! My outputs out of motion are measured in seconds now not go have a coffee and come back.

Didn't know about that. Just tried it. Very cool!

'More Space' is only 3200 x 1800 px.

Maybe it doesn't express it in retina terms?

Since retina is a apple term for their method.

There's no actual 'method' to speak of, a Retina screen is simply a high resolution screen, pixels are pixels, it's an absolute measurement, the highest setting in the 'Scaled' preferences is 'More Space' which is 3200 x 1800, but you can access the full native resolution of 5120 x 2880 by holding down option/alt which will give you more options.

@Lost_Oasis_Games seems to have set his to 5120 x 2880 by the sounds of it, maybe ask him what he did (I'm petty sure it's option/alt when in the 'Scaled' preferences).

If you do manage to set it to 5120 x 2880 you'd be able to see your whole scene !! Which along with the built in OS X zoom (with smoothing turned off) would go a long way to circumventing GameSalad's difficultly navigating large scenes.

I would love a Retina iMac, especially for GameSalad and large scenes, I wonder if it's illegal to sell your children on ebay ? I doubt it.

@Socks, if you can't sell them. Maybe you could at least send them to work in your local coal mine or steel mill and take their paychecks...

I hold down option. And all I get is a " detect display" button but it does nothing cause there is no external display attached. Show me a screenshot of these option key extras.

Hold down option before you select scale. So deselect scale and the hold down option and as option is down click scale

  • tmanntmann Member Posts: 278

Direct from Frau Google "You also can "press and hold the 'Option' key while clicking the 'Scaled' button" in the "Displays" Control Panel to see additional resolutions." Although I would have thought your interface will get very tiny unless the OS or GS has catered for it but if I thought again I might think differently...

I mean show me a screen shot of the changes the option key will make. Show me what you see different when you click and hold the option key. Show me these different scales that pop up. I don't see anything change in regards to choices.

There are a couple of variations on the Mac alt key, the one I posted is definitely Mac (I don't think it's the current version ? but it's the same as the one on my Mac keyboards).

Ok we are back to apples and oranges. You clearly misunderstood me when you first started showing images of an option key. That I obviously aware of. So I was trying to make myself clear. Just as I sent you a screen shot of my computer screen and the options I currently had. I was wanting you to do the same except show me what you are talking about when you are pressing the option key. Show me the change in choices to choose from. The max I am given is shown in my screenshot. Show me in a screenshot. What I am not seeing that you are. Is it really that hard to understand the premise of my reply? I've set here and tried even combination of clicks and holds and nothing has changed for me in regards to my options of choice.

Not at all, it was me being funny ! (well, my attempt at funny at least)

You asked to see 'these option key extras', I showed you a spare option key, this level of (frankly pitiful) humour often makes me laugh, I'm cheap like that.

He is quite clearly saying he tried it and it didn't work:

And yes, it doesn't. At least on the latest OS X, per my own tests.
