So i'm hesitant to update, mostly because of the bug with TextSubStr. Is this resolved in this release or it's resolved pending next release?

Same with the general collision issues?

That's fixed in the next release.

  • Encouraged to see how fast you guys are fixing things! Custom collisions are gonna be huge for our upcoming title!

Hi, i'm a little bit confused about this new features...
we need to use an external tool for custom collision shape?
we need to buy this tool?

Why GS haven't a internal editor for collision shape?

Anyway i need a video tutorial to understand it...

We released the custom physics support the way it is because implementing a vertex/shape editor will take a month or two. We do hope to have an in-tool editor available in the future, but we felt that the community would want to have access to this feature sooner than later.

You can use the Physics Body Editor tool, which is free.

I also agree with this method. The tools required are not hard to use at all. Heck I'd leave it this way and would rather you guys fix and add other stuff than creating redundant things. People should get used to using third party tools as other things you guys may want to do might require third party tools.

I agree with this. If a third party has an elegant solution we can use, or even feature we can add, no point reinventing the wheel as they say. GS Team resources and time are better spent elsewhere as there is always plenty to still do.

I have a quick question on Physics Editor... I have been playing around with it and it works well. But if you have an animation, will it let you export each frame? Or can you only put it around the Actor?

For example, I have an enemy that lunges at you. I currently have the custom collision set around the actor...but since the custom collision frame is around the first frame, during the lunge state of the animation the collision will not happen because it is not within the collision area

  • The_Gamesalad_GuruThe_Gamesalad_Guru Member Posts: 9,922

It does not work for animations at this time.

No, I am using Physics Body Editor . . . . do you think that might be the issue ?

How do you open Physics Body Editor? I keep getting this error.

Make sure you are using Java 1.6 supplied by Apple, not the most current version of Java. The help page for custom collision gives a small script you should use to run it on Mac.

I can't open it any more ! I'm jelous of your error :) Previously I would click on the 'physics-body-editor.jar' file and it opened, but during all my experimentation to get it to work I must have changed something because now when I click on 'physics-body-editor.jar' nothing happens . . . the GS documentation is not great, considering the target demographic are non coders (me!!) telling your audience to 'run this simple script' without explaining how (I have no clue how to run a script) or suggesting downloads without providing actual links to the relevant files (I've searched, but with no luck as yet) make it difficult to get this thing going, my next plan is to steal @Armelline's brain in a daring midnight heist.

Hi Steve, do you have a link for Java 1.6 - the nearest thing I have been able to find is 'Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 17' which 'updates' Java to 1.6.0_65 . . . is this the right file to download ? A link to the relevant file would in the CookBook would be ideal.

Same deal with "a small script you should use to run it" - for all us non-programmers who spent our lives in Photoshop and After Effects can you offer a few suggestions as to how you'd run a script ?

The slow way is to open up a terminal, go to the directory where you have Physics Body Editor, and type the lines in the script (not including the 1st line that starts with a # character). You'll have to do that every time you want to run it, though.

The fast way is to enter those lines into a text file (including the 1st line), and save that file in the same directory as the Physics Body Editor jar file. I suggest calling the file "runme". You'll then need to open up Terminal, go to the directory where runme is, and type the following line:

    chmod +x runme

You can then run the program by opening Terminal, going to where runme and Physics Body Editor are, and typing:

    ./runme

Thanks, I haven't got a clue how to use terminal, never opened it in my life, I'm not even sure how to go to a directory or what that even means, but I'll Google around and see if I can find some instructions.

Or you can just use the PhysicsEditor trial and the GameSalad exporter and save yourself some headache.

The Windows version automatically updates from any other 1.x version to the latest. So, just run it to get the update.

Yeah agreed PhysicsEditor looks like a more robust piece of software, but I downloaded the PhysicsEditor trial over a week ago (the trial is 7 days), I'll see if I can get Physics Body Editor working, if I'm successful I'll share anything I discover.

    Got it working

    1.Check version
go to hard drive/ library / java / JavaVirtualMachines -- make sure you nothing in there or except maybe 1.6.0jdk (if you have 1.6.0 keep it skip to step 4)

    2.disable old version
    open terminal
    and type in

    sudo rm -fr /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin

    sudo rm -fr /Library/PreferencePanes/JavaControlPanel.prefpane

    3.get new version
    download and install
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_US

    4.intall

    stuff from http://help.gamesalad.com/gamesalad-cookbook/7-using-pro-features/custom-collision-shapes-2/

scroll down to "Using Physics Body Editor" , copy the first 3 lines of code in text box. paste it in terminal, hit enter, and it should work

Notes i have physics body loader in home folder.

If you hate the terminal check out this little app that will run command for you.

I'm on El Capitan so your results may differ, but this is what I did:

    1. Downloaded Java from here: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572?locale=en_US
    2. Installed it. (Note - if you're on El Capitan you may have to temporarily disable SIP, but you can re-enabled it after the install. I did not have to do this, though.)
    3. I ran PhysicsBodyEditor.

    I didn't use any scripts.

I strongly recommend just buying PhysicsEditor, though. It's massively easier to use.

    @scottharrrules43 @Armelline

Thanks, I got it working ! I had to use various parts from both your suggestions - as following each one didn't get things going for me for some reason - but after a lot of clicking I got it working ! I agree that the paid editor is the only viable one given GS's target demographic who - like me - don't really know what they are doing when it comes to using the terminal and scripts and all that stuff, and the documentation is already so fragmented with so many small clues left out (how to 'go to a directory' what image formats are required etc) and spread over a few threads, videos and CookBook pages . . . some of which (the threads) will eventually sink . . . so yes, Physics Editor is the only viable option right now.

It reminded me of the Ad Hoc / Publishing / Viewer installation maze (the fact that the majority of GS users don't end up publishing anything I suspect is - at least - partially a result of how impenetrable this process is), but glad there is another more user friendly option.

Glad you've got it working! But I don't agree that it's unreasonably difficult. You seem to have had a lot more problems than will be expected as standard.

The only difficult thing (normally) about using Physics Body Editor is that you need to install Java - which is a choice Apple made with El Capitan. After that it's pretty simple.

And I'd argue that "go to a directory" is something that if you can't handle you shouldn't be making games at all, even with GameSalad :D

My point is that when it comes to the details people like me get lost, GS could have put a link to the relevant version of Java you need to install, I searched all over the place for 1.6, the actual version I ended up using (on your / scottharrrules43's recommendation) was called legacy Java 6 runtime, I think I passed that several times on my searches, but I was looking for 1.6 . . . . this information will, in time, sink with the thread - then there were conflicting views on how you run Physics Body, it also wasn't made clear whether you needed to install El Capitan, the required image format could have been noted . . and so on . . . just lots of little details, none of them insurmountable, but you only need miss one detail out to put this out of reach, not everyone has your brain ! :)

I think the idea that you need to know your way around terminal kind of misses the point of GameSalad, the whole point of GameSalad is to democratise game making, put it into the hands of designers and illustrators, teachers, kids and so on . . . the very people who've probably never even heard of terminal, let alone know how to operate it.

Anyhow, it's working now - and I agree that PhysicsEditor is the way to go.

Ah I didn't realise that referred to the Terminal - I didn't need to use it at all to set up either app. The majority shouldn't need to touch the Terminal.

Yeah, weirdly in the end I was also able to open PBE simply by double clicking on it, I'm not sure what I did to allow this, but I don't need to use that script thing now !

Also I was stumped for a long time with trying to get auto trace to work, I didn't realise you needed to make the image's BG invisible, but it's all good now !

Can anyone confirm that load times are faster? I'm actually experiencing the opposite with this update.
