the Unofficial GameSalad Textbook is now available... in Print and PDF.

If you want a printed copy, you can buy it for $29.95 through Lulu.

They're having a "Free Summer Shipping" sale and my book qualifies... but I think it's only for the United States.

The PDF version is still available for $19.98. You can save almost $10 and save some trees. The book works great in iBooks. The Table of Contents and the Index have lots of links for ease of navigation.

If you want to order the book, or if you are looking for more information about the book, you can visit my website...

I downloaded the sample PDF and it jailbroke my iPhone! AAARGH!

Just kidding. PDF sample looks good, hopefully you'll still have it for sale at $19 when I get my paycheck on Friday.

Thanks for your contribution, it's very much appreciated here.

The PDF version of this book is being changed to Non-Printable! That's to make it fair for the ones who pay for the printed copy. You'd not supposed to make copies of the PDF.

@Photics: Glad you did that, last thing you need is people stealing the PDF

I referred someone that's thinking of using Gamesalad to this book, it's a great and I wish I had this almost 2 years ago!!

Yeah but I just saw the shipping costs - it's a bit expensive as I live in Aussie :( All up would cost me over $40... twice the price of the PDF and I just spent $30 on an Objective C book... WAAAAH!

    Thank you! :)

    All orders are up-to-date.

The PDF is far outselling the printed version. Not exactly a fair fight, as the printed version costs a lot more. The PDF version has those cool links and PDFs can be searched electronically, but the book is easier to read and has that new book smell. HA!

I still don't have my printed copy yet, but I think I like the PDF version more. I don't have to worry about ruining it and it doesn't take up space. Oh sure, your home or office can look cooler with a wall of books behind you. There are merits on both sides. But if you look at the poll and the sales numbers, perhaps it will be extremely rare to have a printed book in the future.

Cheers Photics, on page 19 so far, fantastic reading.

Weird, I think I knew every thing so far (looking forward to the maths and other bits later). But its great reading over it all again. Your views on each of the demos that come with GameSalad are nice to read too...Am I ready to set Game Salad to Ultra Hard and try a platformer?

Really nicely written, relaxed yet informative...

Just copied the PDF onto ibooks on my iphone (I now want a retina display). Still readable though in landscape.

    Many thanks....

Hey Photics, I purchased your textbook. Great work and I like your examples. 1 quick question, the movement you showed in the platforming section made use of the acceleration nicely. But the characters seem to have a long "slide" after the keyboard is released. Is there a way to shorten that slide?

    Great work.

I'm glad that you like the book!

Did you change the actor's friction? I'm thinking that should change the sliding.

Just bought the PDF version for my 10yo son, he is an avid GameSalad user, spending his Thanksgiving (in Canada) weekend developing his first game.
  • PhoticsPhotics Member Posts: 4,172
Wow, that's awesome! GameSalad is an excellent introduction to game development and the related professions... and the textbook is written as an overall guide to the game creation process. I'm not sure if the math section is too advanced for a 10 year old, but it's a great introduction to advanced mathematics in High School.

    All orders are up-to-date again.

I will be purchasing my copy tonight. Can't wiat to get it.
  • Hey I tried clicking the link for the printed version (as it is my preference) but it says "We're sorry, the item you requested is not available." Is it because I live in the UK or is this juss a temporary thing? Either way I'll get the book be it PDF or Print.

I'll be online for the next few hours. If you try to buy The Unofficial GameSalad Textbook later in the night (I'm in New York), the order will be processed in the morning.

The printed version has been discontinued. It's only available digitally. I think it's just too expensive. With international shipping, you could pay over $40 for the book. Instead, I'm in the process of converting the book to an ePub. (I'm still waiting for the textbook to become available on the iBookstore.) If there are updates to the textbook, ePub will make it easier to make changes. And after using iBooks on an iPhone 4, it's an amazing reading experience. It looks great. This is a global community. Everyone here should have an iOS device with iBooks, but not everyone can get the printed book easily.

I read an article that suggests printed books will be dead in five years...
    http://techcrunch.com/2010/08/06/physical-book-dead/

I don't know if that's true, but it certainly seems the direction for Photics.com publications. E-books are cheaper and more accessible. Reading from a monitor is rough, but the ePub works on so many great devices... like the iPad and Retina Displays.

I'm planning to make the epub version of the textbook available in the download area once the textbook hits the iBookstore.
