    Apple just accepted my universal app that is letterbox for iPad but fits perfect on iPhone.

    I used iPad with overscan, put all the side actors(settings button,...) in the first square, and i think it's fine.

    Overscan or Stretch starting with iPad resolution is your best bet, no single one is a magic bullet however and do require some configuration to be just right. I use stretch.
