My Ideas For the forums-Feedback please!

We all know that the forums have lost what they used to be. I have some ideas on how they could be set up to help fix some of the problems.

I think that there should be 5 levels of user
-guest- if you miss used your member or even user status then you would be made a guest. You would not be able to post at all or start topics. You could appeal to Gs to get your status changed.

-user- is able to make topics and post only on their topics. This way GS could take the forums away from people who use them wrong.

-member- able to make, and post on any topic. This is something you would need to get buy taking a conduct test and being approved by GS. This way GS could take the forums away from people who use them wrong as well.

-sous chef- same as now

-head chef- same as now

please tell me what you think about this idea.

I think that the forums should be upgraded to something more powerful, like vBulletin. That way, the members of this community would have more incentive to keep it nice. Enable the reputation feature. If you post something bad, your reputation drops. For those with higher reputation, they get more forum privileges... like better avatars and attachments.

Also, vBulletin has better private messaging and blogs. This would make it easier for people to share promo codes and game assets. Developers could form groups to make teams. Photo galleries can be added to promote games.

And trouble makers can easily be banned... for a short amount of time or indefinitely.

I like the idea! the only thing if that if you had an ok score and really were a jerk I think you should need to appeal to get anything back not just post more until your score is good again. Other than that I like.

Pretty good idea you got there. Idk if you meant this or not, but they should make it to where NEW users start from guest. But see, there is a problem with that. What if a new user comes to the forum with nothing wrong with them and they have questions. How will they ask someone? How would you get upgraded to user if you can't talk to show you are worthy. I think you have a good idea going though. we just need to cool down and let this blow over.

I agree tshirt, but the thing is that I am only 14 and low on funds right now. I can't even buy mac dev right now(also don't have any great games ideas so im not trying too hard to get it)... I Just got my $2000 macbook pro. But I could do the $25 or maybe even less... I think $10 would keep them out. Edit: It is only the non mature kids that are messing with the system

@DL You would start at user... Sry did not make that clear
  • How about something similar to gawkers comment system where new members have to be approved a certain amount of times by starred members in order to upgrade to become a regular member and only the regular members that contribute a lot are starred or something along those lines.

I don't think charging for the forum would keep kids out as most of the kids here have access to their parents credit cards.

Many good thoughts but one thing for sure something has to be done. when we have people flaming some of the most respected members of our community there needs to be changes. Not sure on what is possible or not with forum software but is there a way that if a user gets 10 strikes by 10 different members they are cut off or something along those lines. I was also thinking about a Pro Member Only area but not sure if it's fair to the many non pro contributing members.

I like your idea, but what if someone is either mad or jealous and they just decide to give you a strike for no reason. Then even the most respected members could get kicked.

Well that's why it needs to be by a set number of different members. 1 or 2 strikes does nothing but if 10 then they lose all posting privileges. You can only strike a member once, so you can't have same member giving multiple strikes to another member. It's a community vote sort of

Scoots, I like where you are going, I think that you should need to submit a reason to give a srike along with a link to the topic or a screen shot, This would get rid of people giving you a strike for no good reason

either way, something needs to be done. We could have like groups. Where members can form invite only parties kinda like xbox. So if you are tired or immature brats acting up, you can make your own party and invite the people you want.

can't you just create a new login if you get barred or a bad rep?
  • crazyfishdevcrazyfishdev Member Posts: 283

yes but its very easy to check the ip to see if its a new account from the same computer the old account was made on.

But then again they can just go to a different computer. But if theree was some kind of formal banning they would just keep getting kicked. ANd if they get banned and come back but we cant tell, then in effect the banning worked cause the behavior stopped.

its a very delicate situation if you ask me! but something needs to be done. Im personally down to travel the world smaking these people in the back of the head, but i dont think i saved up enough air miles hehe

I think that perhaps GS should require more detailed login details and match that with IPs and perhaps they coud have a little more to work with in banning people.

that would be great.too many kids in the forums...

on another thread named "whats your age" most of the ppl were between 14-17.

darren left for a reason.. THAT reason :)

Idk how effective this will be, and it really doesn't "fix" the situation, but what if we had rankings with stars. Like if you were well respected and never did anything wrong, you would have 4-5 stars. and the other members on the forum vote on you. And if you suck, you act like an a**, you have 0-1 stars. also, I think our profiles should have more to them. Like a wall, where you can post. like facebook kinda. I think the PM should be better. But the case of creating new accounts will always come into play.

Some great ideas here and it's great to have this discussion.

I don't personally think that there should be a charge. I think that we would see a substantial reduction in users and hence a narrowing of input. However, I do think crazyfish makes a good point - I've seen a few threads recently where members have been getting at each other, for whatever reason.

Might I humbly throw into the mix:

    - Stated and clear terms & conditions. This should encourage decorum.
    - The ability to 'star' threads and posts. Those that provide high quality input can receive recognition.
    - An ignore button. Click this button to ignore that user. Helps if someone is hacking you off.
    - Higher level forum. When users have e.g. 200+ posts they can access a higher level forum.

Just a few ideas to add to the discussion.
