I don't personally think that there should be a charge. I think that we would see a substantial reduction in users and hence a narrowing of input. However, I do think crazyfish makes a good point - I've seen a few threads recently where members have been getting at each other, for whatever reason.
Might I humbly throw into the mix:
- Stated and clear terms & conditions. This should encourage decorum. - The ability to 'star' threads and posts. Those that provide high quality input can receive recognition. - An ignore button. Click this button to ignore that user. Helps if someone is hacking you off. - Higher level forum. When users have e.g. 200+ posts they can access a higher level forum.
Just a few ideas to add to the discussion.
I like the ignore button idea as well as the high level forums and terms
See, if we do the 100 hours or more, than the REAL newcomers that actually want to learn, won't have access to some of the greatest advice possible. DL
It going to be very difficult to do since it seems the people that are causing the trouble don't seem to think they are a problem. Could this not be solved by making more Sous Chefs and giving them more power such as temp bans? All the Sous Chefs I've seen do a great job there just isn't many of them.
Its obvious the forums are taking a turn for the worst, but I don't see why we should charge people to use them. Yes, it would probably get rid of the little kids who have nothing to do but start crap, but users, like myself, who have limited funds rely on as much free stuff as possible, so charging someone who is using the forums to get help using GameSalad doesn't seem fair. Personally, I think GS should band those members who obviously want to start unnecessary arguments on the forums. Ya if someone gets banned, they could just create another account and go right back go being a pain in the neck, but sooner or later they will be caught and banned again, so hopefully they will give up after a few times. Its just sad that a few annoying little kids can ruin the forums for everyone else who is trying to use the forums to their advantage.
Remember when the problem on the forums used to be people selling everything??? Then someone complained and that started the childish acts. haha. I forgot about that. but yes, we can stand here and talk all we want, but someone needs to do someTHING. DL

I will be sending to Yoda soon so if you want any more things added just ask.

I think you have thought of everything Josh. Hope Yoda responds. I was thinking of sending him a PM myself.
I really don't think the solution is to charge any more money, the overheads for building a little app can get quite high as it is, without having to pay just to ask for some help, or sell a template or help others. Charging won't get rid of kids, a lot kids have money and a lot of adults don't, this definitely is not the solution and honestly is not the problem in the first place, as a lot of kids are mature and great members of these forums.
I also don't think the forum should be divided into "higher" categories to lock people out. Its the new people that need help and access to all parts of the forums the most. And just because you've been here a long time doesn't necessarily make you any better or worse than some mature or immature 12 year old that just joined a day ago.
I also think this is getting blown out of proportion, its like 3 people who aren't great members of the forum and everyone's getting up in arms. Have any of you been to any internet forums recently? 3, hell, 30 bad members would still make this one of the cleanest, nicest forums out there!
What we need is simply a more powerful forum, as someone else suggested a vbulletin forum with reputation and easier bans would be all we need. As for now, people still ask for help and the majority of people still give help and advice freely, the purpose of the forums are still going strong, albeit for a few recent posts.
I understand you all want this to be some awesome, sanctuary-like place for devs to talk, and help each other with no drama, and thats's great, I obviously want that too. But, hey this is simply an internet forum, people are gonna be idiots, but they don't have to affect you. Some guys digital letters don't have any impact on your life if you just don't let it.
I'm all for revamping these forums, as it does need to happen, but I don't think its as an important issue as people have been making it out to be, and honestly there are many other more important things the peeps over at Gamesalad should be working on.
Thanks for those requests. We will look into those.

Most of these are all good ideas guys but honestly, Step 1 needs to be the sous-chefs we have now stepping in and dealing with issues. they're position was intended to be moderators yet only a couple perform the task. the rest just benefit from more info about GameSalad, in that, they get to test new builds of GS. They have marginally more access to the head-chefs than the normal user. This is step 1 and where GS needs to step in a say do the job or we'll find someone else. and yes I know its not a paying gig so everyones worried about telling someone that but Someone most people thrive on new responsibilities as well as the inside info we can surely find some here that know what they are doing and willing to perform the tasks. I do think the sous-chefs need a way to temporarily ban a user as well as a way user can submit complaints on other users. Unfortunately the reports will most likely overwhelm who ever has to look into them.

I've emailed the GS team a few times about users abusing their ability to post on the forums, and they are always very good about dealing with it. They told me they want to improve the forums and hope to have someone in house over the next few weeks to give it the focus it deserves.
true, but i imagine with the right coding they could do worse than that. Imagine if they banned your account after you submitted a game. They could ban you from publishing based on your provisioning profile, without which apple will not let you submit updates.

Thats almost scary. I was just being a wise ass. LOL
Ip addresses can be changed on the fly. There's virtually no possible waY to perm ban anybody.

Might I direct your attention to jon's idea. Yes as even I said anything is possible but OMG, If I knew GameSalad would do something like this I prob would only come here to ask a question and leave. Geez that would cause lots of problems.

Truth be known you can trust most of the people with the avatars because they have been here longer.
